Miami’s ‘Maleebo’ shines as Malik Washington channels Deebo Samuel with dynamic playmaking for Dolphins’ versatile offense

Washington’s Versatility Shines in Miami’s Offense

Malik Washington is carving out a significant role in the Miami Dolphins’ offense this season. Despite the team facing challenges, Washington stands out as a dynamic all-purpose playmaker. The Dolphins recognized his potential early, selecting him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, primarily due to his ability to excel with the ball in his hands.

Rookie Year Impact

In his inaugural season, Washington primarily made his mark as both a receiver and a return specialist. He recorded 26 receptions for 233 yards while amassing 564 total return yards from kickoffs and punts. However, this season has seen him expand his repertoire significantly.

Washington has taken on the role of running back, carrying the ball six times for 52 yards—a notable increase compared to his rookie year. This development has not only boosted his individual stats but has also added a new dimension to the Dolphins’ offensive strategy.

A New Nickname Emerges

Head coach Mike McDaniel has taken notice of Washington’s evolving skill set, affectionately dubbing him “Maleebo.” While Washington jokes about his new nickname, he recognizes the influence of established playmakers like Deebo Samuel, whose versatility he admires.

“I’ve watched some Deebo Samuel tape,” Washington shared. “He’s probably one of the best at just going into the backfield and making plays happen. I want to create my own game in that sense and be as versatile.”

While comparing Washington to Samuel may be premature given the latter’s established career, their playing styles exhibit intriguing similarities. Both players thrive on their ability to impact the game in multiple ways.

Contribution to the Running Game

Washington’s contributions to the running game, albeit limited to just six carries, have proven to be impactful. He is averaging an impressive 8.7 yards per carry, with three of those runs resulting in first downs. His versatility creates opportunities not only for himself but for his teammates as well.

“We all have to jell together, we all have to make each other work,” Washington remarked about his running game role. “Whether that’s incorporating me in different spots so we can get somebody else open or allowing me to get the ball, it all just opens up our offense.”

Washington’s carries often come from creative play designs, including screens and reverses, rather than traditional handoffs. This unpredictability forces opposing defenses to remain vigilant, particularly when he motions into the backfield.

Looking Ahead

As Washington continues to develop his game, his ability to adapt and innovate within the Dolphins’ offense could be crucial for the team moving forward. With his knack for making plays, Washington represents a bright spot for the franchise, illustrating the potential for growth as the season unfolds.
