Dolphins Elevate Practice Squad Players Ahead of Key Matchup

The Miami Dolphins have made strategic moves ahead of their Sunday showdown against the Cleveland Browns, elevating two players from the practice squad. This decision enhances their roster options, particularly in the cornerback position, as they prepare to tackle their next opponent.

Cornerback Depth Boost

The Dolphins are set to welcome back Storm Duck, who started in Week 1 but has been sidelined for the past five games due to an ankle injury. Alongside Duck, veteran Kendall Sheffield has also been elevated from the practice squad. These additions bring the total number of available cornerbacks to six for the matchup. The roster now includes Jack Jones, Rasul Douglas, Ethan Bonner, and JuJu Brents, alongside Duck and Sheffield.

While Sheffield’s role may be primarily on special teams, reminiscent of Isaiah Johnson’s limited play last week against the L.A. Chargers, the depth at cornerback adds a layer of flexibility for the coaching staff. The focus, however, remains on who will secure the starting position. Head coach Mike McDaniel and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver have both highlighted Douglas’s impressive performances in Duck’s absence, suggesting he could retain a starting spot, with Jones likely filling the other corner position.

Linebacker Reinforcement

In addition to the cornerback changes, linebacker Quinton Bell has been elevated for the second consecutive game. Bell’s previous appearance resulted in limited action, primarily on special teams. However, the Dolphins are struggling with run defense, and Bell’s promotion could signal a shift in strategy as they look to improve edge setting. Coach McDaniel’s acknowledgment of the team’s defensive challenges indicates a potential for Bell to see more time on the field in a defensive role this week.

As the Dolphins gear up for this pivotal game, these practice squad elevations reflect a calculated approach to bolster their roster. The return of Duck and the addition of Sheffield alongside Bell highlight the team’s commitment to enhancing both their defensive strategies and overall game readiness.
