Dolphins Remain Silent at Trade Deadline, Waddle and Chubb Stay Put
The Miami Dolphins generated significant buzz leading up to the NFL trade deadline, but ultimately opted not to make any moves. Fans and analysts alike expected a flurry of activity, especially considering the murmurs of potential trades involving star players. However, the lack of any trades left many questioning the Dolphins’ strategy.
High-Profile Players in the Mix
Reports indicated that the Dolphins received inquiries about several key players, including wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and outside linebacker Bradley Chubb. According to sources, offers were made for both players, but Miami’s front office decided to hold firm.
Waddle, who is just 27 and has a favorable contract situation, was seen as a valuable asset. With a cap hit of $11.7 million in 2026 and no guaranteed salary after that, trading him would have raised eyebrows. The Dolphins had set a high asking price for Waddle, reportedly seeking a first-round pick along with additional considerations. Given his age and production, it’s understandable why the Dolphins would hesitate to part ways with such a promising talent.
Chubb, on the other hand, appeared to be a more logical candidate for a trade due to his age and injury history. While it was anticipated that his cap number might make him a salary cap casualty next offseason, no offers were enticing enough for Miami to let him go. Moreover, Chubb is considered a leader on the team, which likely weighed into the decision to keep him around.
Missed Opportunities and Fan Frustration
The Dolphins’ inactivity at the trade deadline contrasted sharply with the moves made by their AFC East rivals, the New York Jets. After trading Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner, the Jets amassed three first-round picks, one second-round pick, and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. This left many Dolphins fans feeling disappointed, especially as they watched their team remain stagnant.
It’s important to note, however, that while having numerous draft picks can seem advantageous, it doesn’t guarantee success. The Dolphins experienced this firsthand when they ended up with nine picks in the first and second rounds during the 2020 and 2021 drafts, yet struggled to convert those selections into impactful players.
Additionally, the Jets’ trades involved moving on from two of their best defensive players, both under 30. Comparatively, the Dolphins didn’t possess players on their roster who could command such a return. Teams were reportedly hesitant to meet Miami’s demands for Waddle, further complicating any potential trades.
Market Dynamics for Position Players
The trade market dynamics also played a crucial role in Miami’s decision-making process. Running backs and wide receivers typically do not garner the same value as defensive tackles or cornerbacks, which may have limited Miami’s options. Even if the Dolphins had considered trading De’Von Achane, the reality is that the market for offensive skill positions is often less lucrative.
As the Dolphins look ahead, they remain committed to their current roster. The focus will now shift to how they can leverage their existing talent for the remainder of the season. While the trade deadline may have come and gone without the anticipated fireworks, the Dolphins are poised to continue their campaign with the players they have, including Waddle and Chubb, who are central to their plans moving forward.
