Miami Dolphins’ game plan reshuffle
Willie Gay poised for bigger role in crucial Patriots clash

The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for a significant shift in their game plan as they prepare to face the New England Patriots this Sunday. Central to this strategy is linebacker Willie Gay Jr., whose impressive performances during training camp did not translate into substantial playing time in the season opener.

Limited Usage in Season Opener

Despite showcasing his skills throughout training camp, Gay found himself relegated to special teams during the Dolphins’ season debut against the Indianapolis Colts. Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has acknowledged the oversight, emphasizing the need to integrate Gay more prominently into the defensive lineup.

“I’ve got to find a way to get Willie on the field,” Weaver stated during a media session. “There was a plan, certainly, to get him in the game. Plans change, right? But I need to get him in. He’s impactful. He’s earned the right to get on the field.”

This commitment to Gay comes after a Week 1 loss where the defense struggled. Though all four linebackers on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster were active, only Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson played every snap, with Gay and K.J. Britt limited to special teams. Brooks and Dodson led the team in tackles, but their contributions did not significantly alter the outcome. The Colts scored on every possession, a scenario that could have benefitted from Gay’s dynamic presence.

A History of Special Teams

This was not the first time Gay has seen limited action. In his career, he has experienced a similar fate on three occasions—once with the Kansas City Chiefs and twice during his stint with the New Orleans Saints. However, his training camp performance this year was a revelation, leading to discussions among media members about his potential as the standout practice player.

In the preseason, Gay demonstrated his playmaking abilities, recording half a sack and a tackle for loss, along with impressive coverage skills. His energy and enthusiasm have not gone unnoticed by teammates, who consistently highlight these attributes as being essential to the team’s morale—qualities that could have made a difference against the Colts.

Looking Ahead

As the Dolphins prepare for their home opener at Hard Rock Stadium, the coaching staff is keen to ensure Gay’s talents are fully utilized. The move to increase his involvement is not just about individual performance; it reflects a broader strategy to enhance the team’s defensive capabilities. With the Patriots looming, the Dolphins’ ability to adapt and optimize their roster will be critical in their quest for victory.
