Dolphins’ De’Von Achane Injury Update Ahead of Steelers Showdown
The spotlight this week has firmly settled on Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane as he recovers from a rib injury sustained during the team’s Week 14 victory. Achane exited the game early and did not return, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming Monday night clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel offered a positive update during Thursday’s press conference, indicating that Achane remains in a favorable position to play.
Gradual Return to Action
McDaniel announced that Achane would don a red non-contact jersey and participate in limited practice on Thursday. “It’ll be a gradual increase in activity and physicality,” McDaniel said, highlighting the careful approach being taken with Achane’s recovery. Players who suffer rib injuries often utilize protective gear, and while the decision to wear a flak jacket ultimately rests with Achane, McDaniel expressed confidence in the running back’s style of play to mitigate the risk of further injury.
“The good news is that how he makes a living is avoiding tacklers,” McDaniel stated. He emphasized that playing through discomfort is a part of the game, particularly as the season progresses. “The bumps and bruises in the National Football League — if you don’t have something in December, you’re probably playing football wrong,” he remarked, underscoring the resilience expected of professional athletes.
Achane’s Impact on the Dolphins’ Offense
Achane has been a pivotal figure for the Dolphins this season, serving as a key contributor to one of the league’s most effective rushing attacks. His absence on the field against the Steelers would undoubtedly be a significant blow to Miami’s offensive strategy. Yet, Achane’s recent performance offers hope for his backups, who stepped up admirably in his absence during the previous game against the New York Jets.
Emerging Stars: Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II
With Achane sidelined, Jaylen Wright seized the opportunity to shine. Despite being overshadowed by rookie Ollie Gordon earlier in the season, Wright delivered a breakout performance against the Jets, accumulating 24 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown. In contrast, Gordon managed only five carries for 17 yards and also found the end zone.
McDaniel acknowledged Wright’s recent surge in performance, noting that it was not a reflection on Gordon. “It was nothing to do with Ollie. [Wright] has been on a heater in practice for the past couple of weeks,” he explained. McDaniel further revealed that even some of his most trusted players urged him to give Wright more touches during the game.
While McDaniel downplayed the impact of Gordon’s struggles, including a fumble during the game, it’s clear that Wright has earned the trust of the coaching staff. Given Gordon’s inconsistency this season, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry, the decision to lean on Wright was understandable, especially against a Jets defense that had been faltering.
Dolphins’ Ground Game Against the Steelers
As the Dolphins prepare for their matchup against the Steelers, the focus will undoubtedly be on their ability to run the ball effectively. Pittsburgh’s defense has not been particularly formidable this season, ranking 21st in rushing yards allowed. After a disappointing performance against the Baltimore Ravens last week, the Steelers will be looking to tighten their defense, but Miami’s ground game could exploit their vulnerabilities.
Regardless of Achane’s participation or the selection of the primary backup, the Dolphins are positioned to make a significant impact on the ground. With the passing game struggling in recent outings, establishing a robust rushing attack will be essential for Miami’s success as they aim for victory against Pittsburgh.
