Mazi Smith’s Dallas days dwindling as Cowboys look to trade first-round pick after repeated sideline snubs

Mazi Smith’s Future with the Cowboys in Jeopardy

Defensive lineman Mazi Smith’s standing with the Dallas Cowboys has taken a significant hit following his status as a healthy scratch prior to the Week 1 clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. This decision marked yet another setback in Smith’s already disappointing career trajectory. As the Cowboys gear up to host the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium this Sunday, signs indicate that Smith’s situation is unlikely to improve.

Jones’ Comments Signal Trade Possibility

During a recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed that the team’s defensive line strategy would remain unchanged for the upcoming matchup against the Giants. This revelation strongly suggests that Smith will again find himself sidelined. According to reports, Jones expressed enthusiasm about the performance of seventh-round pick Jay Toia, further diminishing Smith’s chances of contributing.

A former first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith has struggled to meet the high expectations that come with his draft status. In his debut season, he started all 17 games, recording 41 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, and a single sack. However, his Pro Football Focus grades tell a more troubling story: he earned an overall score of 34.8, with a dismal 35.9 in run defense and a mere 49.6 in pass-rushing, landing him near the bottom of the rankings among interior defensive linemen.

Acknowledging the Struggles

Despite his challenges, Smith has been candid about his performance. “I just have to keep getting better,” he remarked, reflecting on his lackluster showing in the first preseason game. “I wasn’t happy with it at all, to be honest. I just didn’t do anything.” He further acknowledged the weight of expectations tied to being a first-round pick. “There’s expectations, and all that. This is my third year,” he stated, emphasizing his desire to learn and improve.

A Trade on the Horizon?

Given the current circumstances, it appears that Smith’s tenure in Dallas may be drawing to a close. With his recurring status as a healthy scratch, the Cowboys may find little value in retaining him. As the team looks to bolster its roster, moving Smith via trade seems to be the most viable option. Even securing a seventh-round pick in exchange for him could be seen as a small victory for the franchise.

Ultimately, the Cowboys must decide whether to continue the Smith experiment or to pivot and fill his roster spot with a player who could contribute more effectively. The pressure is mounting, and with each passing week, Smith’s future with the Cowboys hangs in the balance.
