Marvin Mims Jr. electrifies with punt return touchdown, Broncos plan offensive expansion
Since making his return from a concussion, Marvin Mims Jr. has emerged as a vital component for the Denver Broncos. His influence has been most pronounced in the return game, with a standout performance in Week 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs. During that matchup, Mims electrified the crowd by returning three punts for a total of 101 yards, drastically changing the field position for Denver.
In the Broncos’ recent 24-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, Mims added another highlight to his resume. He returned a punt for 48 yards, taking it all the way to the end zone for his first career punt return touchdown. This impressive feat shouldn’t come as a shock, considering Mims earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro accolades in both of his first two seasons in the league.
Offensive Role Under Scrutiny
Despite his evident talent in the return game, Mims has struggled to carve out a significant role on offense this season. In the game against the Raiders, he was targeted just once, resulting in a modest five-yard reception. Additionally, he had one carry that netted a mere two yards. Given Mims’ explosive capabilities, it’s puzzling that the Broncos have not devised a more comprehensive plan to utilize him offensively.
Head coach Sean Payton acknowledged the situation, noting that he had designed a few shot plays specifically for Mims during the Raiders game. However, the defensive coverage forced quarterback Bo Nix to focus on safer, shorter routes instead.
Looking Ahead: Increased Involvement on Offense
However, there are indications that Mims’ role could soon expand. Following a staff meeting on Monday, Payton expressed a commitment to finding ways to integrate Mims more into the offensive game plan. “Honestly, just coming out of a staff meeting, we have to continue to find more touches for him on the offensive side of the ball, and we’ll do that,” he said during a conference call.
With this renewed focus, it seems the Broncos are poised to unleash more of Mims’ dynamic skill set in offensive situations, which could further elevate their game as they move forward in the season.
