Malik Washington ready to electrify Dolphins’ returns and offense with new NFL touchback rules against Colts

Malik Washington poised to elevate Dolphins’ returns and offense under new NFL touchback rules

Malik Washington is set to be one of the standout beneficiaries of the NFL’s revamped touchback rules. The Miami Dolphins’ kick returner possesses a unique blend of speed and agility that makes him a constant threat every time he fields the ball. However, last season, a staggering two-thirds of kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, limiting his opportunities to showcase his explosive talent. In an effort to invigorate the return game, the league has moved the touchback placement up to the 35-yard line for the upcoming season, opening the door for Washington to make an impact.

A promising matchup against the Colts

As the Dolphins gear up for their season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, Washington finds himself in an ideal position to capitalize on these new rules. His performance last season was impressive, with 121 kick return yards over expectation—ranking him fifth in the league, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. The Colts, on the other hand, have struggled with kick returns, allowing 8.3 yards over expectation per return, which was the second-highest in the league. Furthermore, Indianapolis gave up a touchdown on a kick return last season and only faced 13 kick returns from opponents, tied for the second fewest. This raises the stakes for Washington as he prepares to potentially take advantage of what could be a limited number of opportunities.

Impact beyond kick returns

Washington’s contributions won’t be limited to special teams. While the Dolphins’ wide receiver corps is spearheaded by the electrifying duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Washington is expected to step into the role of the team’s No. 3 receiver. His speed and playmaking ability make him a valuable asset in the offensive scheme, whether it involves jet sweeps or reverses. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is likely to look for Washington frequently, which could lead to significant plays that further cement his role on the team.

As the season progresses, Washington’s name is expected to gain traction, not just for his return prowess but also for his potential growth in the Dolphins’ offense. The opening game against the Colts could be the launching point for what promises to be an exciting season for Washington, as he aims to electrify fans and make his mark in the league.
