Mac Jones Takes Center Stage as 49ers Backup QB Prepares to Face Saints

The role of a backup quarterback is about to unfold dramatically for the San Francisco 49ers. With starting quarterback Brock Purdy sidelined due to a multi-week toe injury, the spotlight now shifts to Mac Jones. Recently acquired by the 49ers, Jones will make his first start of the season in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.

This isn’t uncharted territory for Jones; he has experience stepping into the starting role, having previously played for both the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, he faces the challenge of transforming a solid 1-0 start into a winning streak, steering the team away from any potential downturn.

Mac Jones’ Starting History

Throughout his career, Mac Jones has compiled a starting record of 20 wins against 29 losses. His journey began on a promising note with a 10-7 record as a rookie with the Patriots. However, the seasons that followed proved more arduous. In 2022, he finished with a 6-8 record, followed by a challenging 2-9 campaign in 2023. His stint with the Jaguars in 2024 saw him start seven games in place of Trevor Lawrence, ending with a 2-5 record.

A Look at Jones’ Statistics

In total, Mac Jones has participated in 52 NFL games, starting in 49 of them. His completion rate stands impressively at 65.9%, with no season falling below 64.9%. Over his career, he has thrown for 54 touchdown passes while throwing 44 interceptions. During his time with the Jaguars in 2024, he notably recorded eight touchdowns alongside eight interceptions.

Though not known for his mobility, Jones has made 145 carries for 419 yards—a modest average of 2.9 yards per carry—resulting in two rushing touchdowns.

Jones’ Draft Background

Mac Jones entered the NFL as the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected by the New England Patriots. This draft was particularly notable as it saw the 49ers trade up to select Trey Lance at the second overall position.

Backup Quarterback Dynamics

With Purdy and Jones currently the only quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, the 49ers have added Adrian Martinez to their practice squad. Once a highly touted recruit from Nebraska, Martinez is now positioned as a depth option, ready to step up if needed.

As the 49ers prepare to face the Saints, all eyes will be on Mac Jones. His ability to harness pressure and lead the team effectively could prove pivotal in the quest for continued success this season.
