Los Angeles Chargers shock NFL with potential trade plans for Quentin Johnston and others

Date:

Los Angeles Chargers eye trade options as NFL deadline approaches

As the NFL trade deadline looms, the Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in a precarious position. While the team is generally regarded as buyers in the market, their recent struggles have sparked discussions around potential trades involving key players, including some who could bring back valuable assets in return.

Offensive Line Woes

The Chargers’ offensive line has taken a significant hit, particularly with the season-ending injury to Joe Alt. This latest setback is just one of many that have plagued the team’s roster, leaving them in desperate need of reinforcements. Beyond the offensive line, the running back position has become a glaring issue as well, with performance that has left much to be desired.

Given these challenges, the Chargers might consider the possibility of parting with certain players to address their pressing needs elsewhere on the roster.

Quentin Johnston under scrutiny

One player whose future with the Chargers has come into question is wide receiver Quentin Johnston. After a promising start to the season, where he showcased his potential, Johnston’s performance has since tapered off. His inconsistency has led to a significant decrease in his contributions, as he risks slipping to fourth in the team’s receiving hierarchy.

Despite his struggles, Johnston retains trade value as a former first-round pick at just 24 years of age. The Chargers have a strong receiving corps, featuring talents like Ladd McConkey, Keenan Allen, and rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden. If the team can identify a trade partner in need of a young receiver, it might be worth exploring the potential for a deal that brings in much-needed depth in other areas.

Bud Dupree’s tenure in question

Another player potentially on the trading block is edge rusher Bud Dupree. His performance this season has been lackluster, tallying only 10 tackles and failing to register a sack over nine games. Dupree has struggled to make an impact, especially in light of Khalil Mack’s absence earlier in the season, which led to the trade for Odafe Oweh.

While Dupree’s contributions have dwindled, the demand for pass-rushing talent across the league remains high. The Chargers could leverage his experience in a trade that might yield an offensive lineman or another key player to bolster their roster.

Will Dissly’s lack of impact

Tight end Will Dissly also finds himself in a precarious position. After a disappointing first season with the Chargers, the addition of Tyler Conklin has not improved matters, as Conklin has similarly struggled to make a significant impact this year. With Gadsden emerging as a reliable target in the passing game, the Chargers might consider packaging Dissly in a trade, allowing them to retain Conklin for depth.

Navigating the trade landscape

As the Chargers navigate the complexities of the trade market, they must weigh their options carefully. With key players underperforming and injuries mounting, the team must consider all avenues to improve their roster. The upcoming trade deadline presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Chargers to reshape their lineup, potentially moving players who no longer fit into their long-term strategy while seeking the reinforcements necessary for a successful season.
