Chargers Seek Stability at Left Tackle as Herbert Faces Unrelenting Pressure
As the Los Angeles Chargers gear up for what has devolved into a routine Week 18 matchup against the Denver Broncos, the stakes have shifted dramatically. What was once envisioned as a potential AFC West championship clash now resembles a preseason affair. Yet, this final regular-season game holds significant importance. With quarterback Justin Herbert in the crosshairs of constant defensive pressure, the Chargers have a critical mission: to ensure his safety while evaluating options at left tackle.
The Left Tackle Dilemma
The left tackle position has emerged as a glaring concern for the Chargers, particularly following injuries that have plagued their roster. The team lost Rashawn Slater in training camp, and Joe Alt later suffered a midseason injury, leaving the offensive line vulnerable. In last weekend’s disappointing loss to the Houston Texans, veteran Bobby Hart was thrust into action on the left side for the first time in three years. The results were disastrous, as Hart surrendered four pressures and three sacks before being pulled from the game in the first half.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh commented on Hart’s struggles, noting, “He was playing so good at right tackle. He was just having trouble getting into the rhythm at left tackle.” This situation underscores the Chargers’ ongoing left tackle woes, with multiple players—Alt, Austin Deculus, Foster Sarell, Trevor Penning, and Hart—having tried their hand at the position this season.
Protecting Herbert’s Future
Despite the turmoil surrounding him, Herbert has delivered a performance deserving of MVP consideration. However, the pressure he faces is staggering. He has been sacked 54 times this season, including five times against Houston alone, all while dealing with a protective guard on his left hand due to a broken bone.
In light of these challenges, the Chargers’ priorities heading into the game against the Broncos are straightforward yet critical:
1. Shield Herbert from further injury and ensure he is healthy for the impending Wild Card playoff game.
2. Identify a reliable left tackle who can protect the franchise quarterback’s blind side.
With the playoffs looming, the urgency to stabilize the offensive line is palpable. The Chargers must find a solution that not only addresses the immediate needs of the team but also fortifies Herbert’s position as a cornerstone of their future. The outcome of Sunday’s game could very well determine the direction of the franchise in the critical postseason ahead.
