Lions on the hunt: six cornerbacks who could bolster Detroit’s defense amidst injury woes

Lions on the Hunt for Cornerback Depth Amidst Injury Concerns

The Detroit Lions are navigating a challenging landscape as they deal with injuries to both of their starting cornerbacks. With their impressive 3-1 start to the season, the Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns 34-10 on Sunday. However, the shadow of injuries looms large once again, prompting the team’s front office to explore potential reinforcements for their secondary.

Injury Update on Key Players

D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold both exited the game against Cleveland and did not return for the second half. Reed was carted off with a hamstring injury, raising immediate concerns about his availability for the upcoming matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Arnold, who has now faced injury setbacks in two games this season, adds to the uncertainty. Safety Kerby Joseph also spent considerable time off the field, further straining the Lions’ defensive depth.

Head coach Dan Campbell’s post-game comments hinted at skepticism regarding Reed’s ability to suit up next week, leaving the team in a precarious position. The Lions currently have a thin cornerback roster, featuring Amik Robertson, Khalil Dorsey, and Rock Ya-Sin as their primary options. Additionally, Brian Branch and Avonte Maddox have experience in the cornerback position, primarily in the slot, but their versatility may not suffice as a long-term solution.

Potential Cornerback Targets for Detroit

In light of their defensive challenges, the Lions could consider several intriguing options to bolster their cornerback depth.

Duke Shelley

Shelley, a seasoned cornerback who began his NFL career with the Chicago Bears in 2019, could be an attractive target for Detroit. After spending time on the practice squads of multiple teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, Shelley has shown that he can contribute at a high level. He notably tried out for the Lions during rookie minicamp earlier this summer, suggesting that there is mutual interest.

Stephon Gilmore

The 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year remains on the market following his stint with the Minnesota Vikings. At 35 years old, Gilmore still possesses the skills that earned him five Pro Bowl selections. With nearly 150 career pass deflections, he could offer the Lions a wealth of experience and leadership on the field. The prospect of chasing a second Super Bowl ring with Detroit presents a compelling opportunity for Gilmore.

Jalen Davis

Currently on the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, Davis provides a unique advantage due to his familiarity with the Bengals’ offensive system. An undrafted standout from Utah State, he has logged 52 games with Cincinnati over five seasons, making him a potential asset should the Lions choose to pursue him. His primary role has been as a slot corner, but his in-depth knowledge of the Bengals could be invaluable.

Andrew Booth

Once a top-50 pick out of Clemson, Booth’s journey has been tumultuous. After two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, he found himself with the Dallas Cowboys, where he made a mark with two starts last season. Despite struggles with injuries and performance, Booth could be a low-risk option for the Lions as a fourth or fifth cornerback, potentially adding depth to their roster.

Tyson Russell

An undrafted rookie, Russell has yet to make a significant impact in the NFL but could be an intriguing option for the Lions. As teams often look to cultivate young talent, Russell may represent a low-cost addition that could pay dividends in the long run.

As the Lions prepare for their next game against the Bengals, the urgency to solidify their cornerback position is palpable. The combination of injury concerns and the need for depth makes it clear that Detroit will be on the lookout for strategic additions to its roster in the coming days.
