The Detroit Lions are making strategic moves ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Chicago Bears, and the focus is squarely on left tackle Taylor Decker’s health. The team’s decision to elevate only linebacker Monty Rice from the practice squad signals a level of confidence in Decker’s ability to play.

Decker’s Status Remains Uncertain

The Lions have opted not to elevate an additional offensive lineman, which might suggest a lack of significant concern regarding Decker’s condition. Without him, the Lions would have just seven offensive linemen available, with no backup tackle on the roster. This situation is compounded by the loss of Jamarco Jones, who was initially slated as the backup at right tackle but has been sidelined for the season due to injury.

Decker underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason, but it remains unclear if his current predicament is related to that procedure. He missed practice throughout the week, earning a questionable designation for Sunday’s game. Head coach Dan Campbell emphasized that Decker doesn’t necessarily need to practice to be ready for action, stating, “He’s got a little bit of something here, and so, we’re just trying to buy him some time to where he feels better.” Campbell expressed confidence in Decker’s experience, suggesting that as long as he feels up to it, he will be prepared for the game.

Manu’s Potential Debut

Should Decker be unable to take the field, the Lions would turn to rookie Giovanni Manu, a fourth-round pick from the 2024 draft. Despite having no offensive snaps in the NFL to his name so far, Manu is on the cusp of his professional debut.

During the preseason, Manu participated in all four exhibition games, where he faced challenges against opposing defenses. He allowed eight pressures and one quarterback hit, but impressively did not surrender any sacks across his 143 snaps at left tackle. His Pro Football Focus grades reflect the struggle, with a 58.2 in pass protection and a 44.0 in run-blocking, indicating areas that require improvement.

Awaiting Final Confirmation

The Lions will provide clarity on Decker’s availability approximately at 11:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, just before they announce their inactives ahead of the 1 p.m. ET kickoff. Until then, the team and fans alike are left to speculate on whether Decker will be in the lineup or if the rookie will step into the spotlight for his first taste of NFL action.
