Lions Enhance Offensive Line Depth with Signing of Devin Cochran
The Detroit Lions have taken a proactive approach to fortify their offensive line depth amid a spate of injuries. On Monday, the franchise announced the signing of former Cincinnati Bengals tackle Devin Cochran to their practice squad.
Injury Concerns Prompt Roster Move
This strategic addition comes in light of the unfortunate news that offensive lineman Jamarco Jones will not return to the field this season. Jones was placed on injured reserve following an ankle injury sustained recently. The Lions also feature veteran Dan Skipper on their practice squad, though he has been grappling with an undisclosed injury, further complicating the team’s depth situation. In response to these challenges, the Lions opted to bring in Cochran as a necessary reinforcement for their offensive line.
Cochran’s Background and Experience
A native of Georgia, Cochran brings valuable experience from his time with the Bengals, where he appeared in nine games last season. He made one start and logged 152 offensive snaps, earning a 50.6 overall grade from Pro Football Focus during his opportunities on the field. Cochran’s collegiate career began at Vanderbilt, where he played from 2017 to 2019, before finishing at Georgia Tech in 2021. Notably, he was teammates with Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs during his tenure at Georgia Tech.
Undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft, Cochran initially signed with the Bengals as a free agent. His time in Cincinnati saw him bounce between the active roster and the practice squad. This year, he was waived during final roster cuts but quickly re-signed to the practice squad, only to be released the following day.
Building Relationships in Cincinnati
During his stint with the Bengals, Cochran developed a close relationship with standout EDGE rusher Trey Hendrickson. Reflecting on this connection, Cochran noted how the dynamic evolved from competition into a mentorship. “For the last couple of years, it wasn’t what it is now. It was competition. He’s made a lot of good points about what it’s like to play,” Cochran explained. He emphasized how facing Hendrickson in practice prepared him for the challenges of the NFL, enhancing his mental and physical readiness.
Cochran’s Role in Detroit
As he transitions to the Lions, Cochran aims to bolster their offensive line depth. In their regular-season opener, the Lions activated three backup offensive linemen: Giovanni Manu, Kayode Awosika, and Kingsley Eguakun, with both Manu and Eguakun making their NFL debuts. The team’s starting five offensive linemen played every snap, underscoring the critical need for depth as the season progresses.
Cochran’s arrival in Detroit represents a significant opportunity for him to showcase his skills while contributing to a Lions team looking to navigate the challenges of the NFL season with a strong and resilient offensive line.
