Broncos Welcome Back Lil’Jordan Humphrey from Giants’ Practice Squad
The Denver Broncos have made a strategic move by bringing back veteran wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who was signed off the New York Giants’ practice squad. This reunion was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and later confirmed by Humphrey’s agent, Jimmy Gould, who expressed enthusiasm for the player’s return to Denver.
Immediate Impact on the Roster
Humphrey’s addition comes just in time, as he is expected to play this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. His signing fills the vacancy left by inside linebacker Karene Reid, who was placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury. This marks the second roster change for the Broncos this week, following the acquisition of offensive tackle Garon Christian from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.
A Look Back at Humphrey’s Career
Entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Humphrey spent his initial three seasons under the guidance of Sean Payton, the former head coach of the New Orleans Saints and the current head coach of the Broncos. Following a brief stint with the New England Patriots, Humphrey is now back in Denver, where he previously recorded 44 receptions for 455 yards and four touchdowns in 34 appearances.
Known for his blocking prowess, particularly on screens and perimeter run plays, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound receiver brings a versatile skill set to the Broncos. Payton has praised Humphrey’s intelligence and adaptability, stating, “One thing about him [is] he’s real smart, so he can play all three positions. He’s versatile. He’s a big target. Obviously, he can block well, but he’s got some traits that sometimes you can’t teach, and he’s got good instincts.”
Current Roster Dynamics
With Humphrey’s return, he will occupy the sixth wide receiver spot on Denver’s active roster, joining Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, Marvin Mims, and Trent Sherfield. This signing may lead to a reduction in offensive snaps for Sherfield, especially after his struggles with blocking in last week’s win over the Raiders. Additionally, Mims has been sidelined for the last two games due to a concussion but is expected to clear protocol in time for the matchup against Kansas City.
As the Broncos gear up for this pivotal game, the addition of Humphrey could provide them with the depth and versatility they need to enhance their offensive strategy.
