Lamar Jackson Draws Controversial Label as ‘Most Overrated’ Quarterback

The Baltimore Ravens quarterback has found himself in the crosshairs of criticism that many would find surprising.

Unfavorable Recognition Amid Success

Lamar Jackson, renowned for his electrifying play style, has been named the most overrated quarterback in the NFL by Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay. This designation seems at odds with Jackson’s impressive statistics and achievements during the regular season, yet Kay argues that the quarterback’s postseason performances have not lived up to expectations.

“Lamar Jackson may not just be one of today’s most overrated active quarterbacks, but also of all time,” Kay asserted. He pointed to Jackson’s .737 winning percentage, which ranks among the best in NFL history, as evidence of his regular-season prowess. However, Kay contends that Jackson’s inability to translate that success into deep playoff runs tarnishes his legacy.

Postseason Shortcomings Cast a Long Shadow

Jackson’s resume includes accolades such as four Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors, all bolstered by his impressive regular-season numbers. However, Kay argues that the two-time MVP award feels “borderline fraudulent” when compared to other legends who have claimed the title multiple times.

The crux of the critique lies in Jackson’s postseason record. His only appearance in an AFC Championship Game ended in a 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, a game where he tallied more turnovers than touchdowns. Until he can lead the Ravens beyond that stage, skepticism will linger.

Perspective on Jackson’s Accomplishments

While some may label him as overrated, it’s crucial to consider the context of Jackson’s achievements. Many franchises, such as the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, would eagerly trade their current quarterbacks for the opportunity to have a player of Jackson’s caliber.

Early in his career, Jackson faced criticism for his passing accuracy, but he has made significant strides in that area. His current completion percentage stands at an impressive 70.1, reflecting his growth as a passer.

As discussions about Jackson’s legacy continue, it’s clear that the narrative surrounding him is complex. His regular-season success and ability to electrify fans are undeniable, even as the specter of postseason performance looms over his career.
