Kyle Dugger stuns fans, ditches Patriots number for fresh start with Steelers at No. 29

Date:

Steelers Welcome Kyle Dugger with New Jersey Number

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced the jersey number of their latest acquisition, former New England Patriots safety Kyle Dugger. As the team prepares for a pivotal matchup against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9, Dugger has chosen to wear No. 29, marking a fresh chapter in his career.

Dugger’s Transition to Pittsburgh

Kyle Dugger, a second-round draft pick from Lenoir Rhyne in 2020, has spent his entire NFL career with the Patriots before being traded to the Steelers earlier this week. During his tenure in New England, Dugger wore No. 35 as a rookie and switched to No. 23 in 2021, a number he maintained through the current season. However, with Darius Slay Jr. currently donning No. 23 for Pittsburgh, Dugger decided against returning to his original number, opting instead for a new identity with the Steelers.

The Legacy of No. 29 in Steelers History

Dugger’s choice of No. 29 is significant, as it has not been claimed this season prior to his arrival. The number has a storied past within the franchise. Notable players have worn No. 29, including Aaron Shampklin and Ryan Watts, who both sported it during the 2024 campaign. However, the most iconic figure associated with this number is undoubtedly running back Barry Foster.

Foster, who played for the Steelers from 1990 to 1994, had a standout season in 1992, rushing for an impressive 1,690 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. His remarkable performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection, a second-place finish in the MVP voting, and a first-team All-Pro nod.

Additionally, defensive back Ron Johnson, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Steelers, also left his mark while wearing No. 29 during his tenure from 1978 to 1984. Dugger now has the opportunity to add his name to this legacy as he embarks on his journey with the Steelers.

As Pittsburgh fans eagerly anticipate Dugger’s debut, the excitement surrounding his fresh start and new number adds an intriguing layer to the team’s narrative this season.
