Kirk Cousins Eyes Jets’ Vulnerable Run Defense as Falcons Prepare for Ground Assault
The Atlanta Falcons are set to take on the New York Jets this Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, with quarterback Kirk Cousins leading the charge once again. Fresh off a commanding victory against the New Orleans Saints, the Falcons showcased a robust running game that proved pivotal in their 24-10 win. It appears that Cousins and his team may adopt a similar ground-focused strategy against the Jets, who have struggled to contain the run.
Injury Concerns and Tactical Adjustments
As the Falcons prepare for their matchup, they face a potential setback with wide receiver Drake London listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game. This absence could prompt Atlanta to revert to a heavy set, utilizing their three-tight-end configuration, a tactic they successfully employed against the Saints. In that game, the Falcons ran their 13 personnel (one running back and three tight ends) more than any team has in the last decade, effectively dominating the Saints’ defense.
The Jets’ Defensive Landscape
While the Jets currently rank 10th in the NFL against the pass, they find themselves struggling against the run, sitting at a disappointing 23rd. Despite this statistical edge, Cousins remains cautious, acknowledging the challenge of facing head coach Aaron Glenn and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
“Another tough test in the NFL this week, going up to MetLife to play the Jets,” Cousins remarked during a press session. “I’ve played against Coach Glenn and Coach Wilks many times throughout my career, and it’s always been a dogfight. I have immense respect for their schematics; they keep you guessing all week and throughout the game.”
Cousins Leverages Inside Knowledge
Cousins may have a strategic advantage thanks to insight from Falcons’ defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who joined Atlanta this season after a four-year stint with the Jets as their defensive coordinator. “We went over the personnel today, not with Coach Ulbrich,” Cousins mentioned when discussing his preparations. “He was in his meeting, but I noted to connect with him at some point this week because he knows everyone there and many of their key players. He was instrumental in bringing them in and developing them.”
One player Cousins is particularly keen to discuss is linebacker Jamien Sherwood, who led the NFL last season with 98 solo tackles and ranked third in total tackles with 158. Under Ulbrich’s guidance, Sherwood thrived, making him a crucial focal point for the Falcons’ offensive game plan. “It’ll be good to connect with him before the week’s over,” Cousins stated, emphasizing the importance of understanding the Jets’ defensive strengths.
As the Falcons gear up for their clash with the Jets, the focus remains on exploiting the opposition’s weaknesses while navigating the challenges posed by a formidable defensive unit. With Cousins at the helm, Atlanta aims to continue their successful ground game strategy, hoping to secure another win in their pursuit of dominance.
