Dolphins Rookie Stock Report After Week 7

The Miami Dolphins faced a challenging Week 7, yet amidst the adversity, some glimmers of hope emerged from their rookie class. Notably, defensive tackle Kenneth Grant showcased significant improvement, offering a much-needed bright spot for the team.

Kenneth Grant Shines in Week 7

Week 6: Slight Stock Up
Week 7: Stock Up

Kenneth Grant’s performance in Week 7 stood out as arguably his best of the season. The rookie defensive tackle recorded one pressure and a tackle for loss, contributing to a few key run stops near the line of scrimmage. He displayed an enhanced ability to anchor at the line, successfully holding his ground and using his agility to disrupt plays in the backfield.

While his pass-rushing capabilities still need development and the improvement in run defense came against a less formidable Browns offensive line, any progress is vital for the team’s future. As the Dolphins navigate a tough season, Grant’s upward trajectory offers a glimmer of optimism.

Jonah Savaiinaea Struggles Continue

Week 6: No Movement
Week 7: Slight Stock Down

In contrast to Grant, Jonah Savaiinaea’s performance has not shown the same promise. Though he did not have a disastrous game, he failed to make a positive impact on the Dolphins’ offense. Savaiinaea was responsible for two pressures, both of which were particularly damaging as he was pushed deep into the pocket.

There were also observable miscommunications with fellow lineman Patrick Paul during running plays, leading to missed assignments. While Savaiinaea did manage to make a block on De’Von Achane’s impressive 46-yard run in the first quarter, further analysis revealed that his contribution was merely adequate rather than exceptional. As the Dolphins continue to work with him, patience will be required in hopes of seeing improvement.

Jordan Phillips Shows Promise

Week 6: Stock Up
Week 7: Slight Stock Up

Jordan Phillips had a mixed bag in Week 7, contrasting sharply with Savaiinaea’s struggles. He experienced one major setback, allowing a long touchdown run from Quinshon Judkins due to being overpowered by a double team at the point of attack. However, aside from that misstep, Phillips demonstrated his strength as a run defender, making it challenging for the Browns to gain traction in the middle of the line.

At just 21 years old, Phillips possesses the potential to evolve from a solid rotational player into a significant impact player if he can consistently shed blocks with precision.

Ollie Gordon II Makes the Most of Limited Chances

Week 6: No Movement
Week 7: Slight Stock Up

Despite only amassing 11 yards on five carries, Ollie Gordon II’s tape revealed that he maximized his limited opportunities. He executed a commendable run off the left side near the Dolphins’ goal line, providing crucial breathing room for the offense, and successfully converted a pivotal fourth-and-short, marking Miami’s only first conversion since the first quarter.

Gordon also caught one of his two targets, maintaining a trend of increased involvement in the passing game. The Dolphins would benefit from utilizing him more effectively, particularly by employing him under center to capitalize on his downhill running style. His negative run this week came from the shotgun, emphasizing the need for the team to play to his strengths.

As the Dolphins move forward through a challenging season, the continued development of these rookies, particularly Kenneth Grant, will be essential to building a brighter future.
