Dolphins Coaches Unveil the Secret to Kenneth Grant’s Transformation
Kenneth Grant, a first-round pick for the Miami Dolphins, faced early challenges in making an impact at the defensive tackle position. Despite high expectations, the rookie struggled to contribute significantly, contributing to one of the league’s least effective run defenses. However, recent performances suggest a promising turnaround, particularly highlighted during the team’s Week 7 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.
A Shift in Performance
Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver noted that Grant’s improved play did not occur out of the blue. “To me, it started two weeks ago, and it started in practice, where he just seemed more relaxed out there,” Weaver shared. This newfound comfort allowed Grant to shed the pressures of being a high draft pick and focus on executing his game.
Statistically, Grant’s performance backs up Weaver’s observations. He registered his first sack against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6, along with two pressures. Following that, his game against the Browns marked a season high, where he recorded five tackles, including his first tackle for loss against the run. Notably, four of those tackles were made near the line of scrimmage, underscoring his growing presence in defensive plays.
Understanding the Changes
Grant’s improvement reflects a common trajectory for rookies, particularly those in demanding positions like defensive tackle. Austin Clark, the Dolphins’ defensive line coach, emphasized that comfort within the scheme and improved technique contributed significantly to Grant’s development. “Definitely encouraged with KG,” Clark stated, highlighting the importance of adjusting to the NFL’s pace and physicality.
Clark also pointed out that Grant has been adapting to a variety of roles on the defensive line, although the majority of his snaps have been at the three-technique position. While Grant has occasionally lined up at nose tackle and defensive end, his primary focus has allowed him to hone his skills more effectively. Developing the stamina required to compete at this level is crucial, as the demands of the NFL far exceed those of college football.
Looking Ahead for Grant
Despite his recent improvements, there remains a long road ahead for Grant to fully justify being the 13th overall pick. Clark acknowledged this reality, affirming that Grant has shown potential but also has much to learn. “He knows that. And he’s a guy you can really challenge. And that’s something we’re doing with him. And he’s getting better every day.”
To continue his development, the Dolphins need to challenge Grant in specific areas. Enhancing his pass-rush skills is essential, as eight pressures and 1.5 sacks over the first seven weeks are below expectations for a player of his caliber. Additionally, tapping into Grant’s athleticism against the run—something that was evident on his college tape—remains a priority.
The past two weeks of improvement are encouraging, but developing consistency will be key. The Dolphins organization still believes in Grant’s potential, with Weaver asserting, “There’s going to be a lot of good games ahead for Kenneth Grant just because of who he is and how he works.” As Grant continues to settle into his role, the Dolphins are optimistic about the future impact he can make on their defense.
