Bengals Eye Kaiir Elam to Strengthen Injury-Plagued Defense

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly considering a move that could bolster their defensive unit: claiming former first-round pick Kaiir Elam. After being waived by the Dallas Cowboys last week, Elam, who is just 24 years old, presents a promising opportunity for a franchise grappling with injuries.

A Compelling Option for the Bengals

Claiming Elam would mean assuming the $1 million guaranteed for the remainder of the season. Given the Bengals’ current struggles, particularly in the secondary, this investment could pay dividends. The team had shown interest in Elam prior to the 2022 NFL Draft, which underscores their recognition of his potential.

His situation diverges from the one faced by Emmanuel Forbes last season, who was still on his rookie deal when he became available. The Bengals missed an opportunity to claim Forbes, a mistake that has become glaring as he currently shines with the Los Angeles Rams. This time around, the Bengals have the chance to secure a player who has endured challenges but has also demonstrated talent.

Injury Concerns Necessitate Action

In light of injuries to key players, the urgency for the Bengals to act is palpable. Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt is likely out for the season with a foot injury, while Marco Wilson is dealing with a hamstring injury sustained against the New England Patriots. These setbacks have left the Bengals’ defensive backfield in a precarious position.

While it’s clear that the Bengals will need to sign a cornerback regardless of Elam’s situation, bringing him in could provide immediate depth and a chance to evaluate his fit within their system over the last six weeks of the season.

Elam’s Career Performance and Potential

Elam’s performance this season includes 29 tackles across 10 games, with seven of those being starts. Originally drafted 23rd overall by the Buffalo Bills in 2022, he was later traded to Dallas in March. Over his career, Elam has recorded 110 tackles, two interceptions, and seven passes defended in 39 games, showcasing his ability to contribute effectively when on the field.

The Bengals have a history of successfully integrating former first-round cornerbacks into their roster. This precedent makes the potential addition of Elam a logical move, particularly given the current state of their cornerback room.

Looking Ahead

Though the Bengals find themselves at a challenging 3-8 this season, the need for depth in the secondary persists. Adding a player like Elam could provide not just immediate relief but also a valuable asset for the future. As the team navigates through the rest of the season, the opportunity to claim Elam represents a strategic step that could fortify their defense during a critical juncture.
