Justin Herbert snubbed in MVP race despite Chargers’ playoff surge and four-game win streak

Chargers Secure Playoff Spot Amid Herbert’s MVP Oversight

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially punched their ticket to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. This achievement comes after a crucial win against the Dallas Cowboys, which, when paired with the Indianapolis Colts’ loss, solidified the Chargers’ postseason berth. With two games remaining in the regular season, reaching 11 wins is a testament to the team’s resilience, particularly given the numerous injuries plaguing both the offensive line and star quarterback Justin Herbert.

Resilience Following a Tough Loss

The Chargers faced a significant setback earlier in the season, suffering an embarrassing 35-6 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars just before their bye week. However, since that moment, the team has rallied impressively, stringing together four consecutive victories. Their resurgence not only puts them back into playoff contention but also raises questions about Herbert’s candidacy for the MVP award. Despite this, the consensus around the league seems to downplay his chances.

Limited MVP Recognition for Herbert

In a recent poll conducted by NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, Herbert received a mere single vote for the MVP award, a stark contrast to the overwhelming support for Matthew Stafford, who garnered 18 votes. Following Stafford were Drake Maye with five votes and reigning MVP Josh Allen with four. The lone vote for Herbert places him at the bottom of the list, highlighting a significant oversight given his performance this season.

Stafford’s impressive 40 touchdown passes against just five interceptions undoubtedly contribute to his status as the favorite. Meanwhile, Maye is approaching 4,000 passing yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions, showcasing his own impressive season. Allen’s MVP status from the previous year continues to earn him recognition, even though his current stats—3,406 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions—do not significantly outshine Herbert’s 3,491 yards, the same number of touchdowns, and just two additional interceptions.

A Path to Greater Respect

The disparity in MVP votes reflects a broader narrative about Herbert’s standing in the league. While his numbers are competitive, it appears he still has work to do to garner the respect he deserves among peers and executives.

With the Chargers now set to enter the postseason, Herbert has a critical opportunity to change the narrative. A strong performance in the playoffs could not only elevate his status but also serve as a platform to showcase his talents on a grand stage, potentially reshaping the MVP conversation in the process.
