Jordan Poyer criticizes Miami Dolphins defense as “draining” following challenging season

Veteran safety Jordan Poyer has returned to the Buffalo Bills after an unremarkable stint with the Miami Dolphins in the 2024 season. Recently, Poyer opened up about his struggles with the Dolphins’ defensive scheme, revealing significant issues he encountered during his time in Miami.

Poyer’s Challenges in Miami

Poyer, who rejoined the Bills after being released and struggling to find a new team in free agency, expressed confusion over the defensive strategies employed by first-year coordinator Anthony Weaver. During a media session, he noted that not only did he struggle to grasp the system, but it seemed that his teammates were equally lost.

Weaver responded to Poyer’s comments, acknowledging the complexities of integrating a new defensive scheme. “One, you’re trying to bring in and install a new system, right?” Weaver explained. “And then you’re bringing all these, like, kind of free agent vet mercenaries that all have their opinions from other systems they’ve come from. So in doing that, you’re trying to bring all that together. You want to disregard the things they’ve done, but you want them to understand what you’re trying to get built and buy into that. There’s a process that needs to occur.”

Feeling Isolated on the Field

In an extensive interview with NFL writer Tyler Dunne for his Go Long site, Poyer shared his profound sense of isolation during the season. “It was the first time in my career,” he stated, “I felt alone on the field. It’s one of the worst feelings.” He elaborated on the mental and emotional toll the experience took on him.

Poyer reflected on the difficulties of navigating defensive responsibilities when he felt uncertain of his teammates’ roles. “I can understand concepts of how an offense is trying to attack us — but if I don’t know where the guy next to me is supposed to go? It’s draining. It took a lot out of me. Mentally, physically, emotionally. And we’re getting our ass whupped.”

Contemplating Retirement

The struggles of the 2024 season were so overwhelming that Poyer even considered retirement. However, his return to the Bills has reignited his career. After initially rejoining the team on the practice squad, he is now back in a starting safety position.

Despite the challenges he faced in Miami, Poyer’s renewed commitment to the Bills suggests he is ready to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. The transition back to a familiar environment may provide the stability and clarity he seeks after a tumultuous year.
