Bengals Stand Firm on Joe Burrow as Starter Despite Playoff Exit
The Cincinnati Bengals have made it clear that their starting quarterback, Joe Burrow, will remain under center for the remainder of the season, even after the team’s playoff hopes have evaporated. When asked whether Burrow might be rested following their disappointing 4-10 record, head coach Zac Taylor responded with a firm “No.”
A Commitment to Winning
Taylor emphasized the team’s commitment to securing victories, stating, “Because we want to win.” This determination is reflected in the Bengals’ performance this season; with Burrow leading the charge, the team boasts a record of 3-2. In stark contrast, they have struggled without him, recording just one win against eight losses.
Burrow has made it abundantly clear that he intends to compete in the final three games of the season. Following a challenging loss to the Baltimore Ravens, he expressed his desire to continue playing. The Bengals’ playoff absence marks the third consecutive season they will miss out, following a 24-0 defeat to the Ravens that saw Burrow shut out for the first time in his NFL career. In that game, he completed 25 of 39 passes for 225 yards but threw two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six in the fourth quarter.
Reflecting on a Frustrating Season
After the loss, Taylor voiced his frustration, particularly regarding the offensive performance. “It really starts with our offense getting shut out. That’s not who we are. That’s unacceptable. Never saw that coming,” he remarked. Taylor noted that the team made five trips into Ravens territory but failed to score, placing accountability on himself as the play caller for their lack of points.
He acknowledged that the offensive struggles included uncharacteristic mistakes and controllable penalties, which added to the overall disappointment of the day.
A Season of Struggles
The Bengals began the season on a promising note, winning their first two games. However, they have since spiraled, with a dismal 2-10 record over the last 12 games. This marks their worst performance and first losing season since 2020. As the team looks ahead, they are currently positioned to select ninth overall in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
While the Bengals face significant challenges moving forward, their focus remains on the final games of the season. The organization is also bracing for critical decisions in the offseason regarding Taylor’s future and the direction of the franchise. As they navigate these tough waters, the Cincinnati Bengals aim to regroup and lay the groundwork for a brighter future.
