Bengals Defense Shines Amid Struggles: Joe Burrow Lauds Cornerbacks

CINCINNATI — While the Bengals’ defense has faced challenges throughout the season, one position group stands out in the eyes of star quarterback Joe Burrow. On Wednesday, Burrow expressed his admiration for the performance of the Bengals’ cornerbacks, specifically highlighting DJ Turner II and Dax Hill.

“Our defensive backs have been playing well all year,” Burrow remarked. He noted Turner’s exceptional play, stating, “In my opinion, DJ has been one of the best corners in the league this year.” Burrow’s confidence in his teammates is palpable, as he added, “Dax is really coming into his own,” underscoring Hill’s development as a key contributor.

Burrow also acknowledged Jalen Davis, who has made significant plays since stepping into the slot role. “I can’t remember exactly what the first game that he was in, but all he’s done is made plays,” Burrow said. He commended the trio for their tenacity, stating that they consistently “make it difficult” for opponents and excel at tackling when necessary. “They’ve been lights out for the last eight to 10 weeks,” he added.

Pro Bowl Snub and Future Prospects

Despite his standout performance, Turner did not receive a Pro Bowl selection this season, although he is a third alternate. Burrow believes Turner is worthy of the accolade. “I thought DJ should have made the Pro Bowl,” he said, acknowledging the common trajectory for first-time Pro Bowl candidates. “I told him the other day, usually the first year that you should make it, you’re typically an alternate. If you stack that year, they usually give it to you the next year.” He reflected on his own career, noting similar patterns he has observed across the league.

The Bengals are optimistic about the long-term potential of both Turner and Hill as foundational pieces for a defense that has faced its fair share of adversity. Burrow’s endorsement is a promising sign, suggesting that if these young players can maintain their form, they possess the talent to anchor a defense capable of contending for a Super Bowl.

With the Bengals aiming to solidify their defensive strategy, the spotlight remains on these emerging stars as they continue to develop their skills and contribute to the team’s success.
