Jim Schwartz praises Tyson Campbell’s physical debut but warns of missed interception chances
Browns’ Defensive Coordinator Evaluates Campbell’s First Game
Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz had much to share about Tyson Campbell’s debut last Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The cornerback, recently acquired through a trade that sent fellow defender Greg Newsome II to Jacksonville, stepped onto the field just days after joining the team. Schwartz acknowledged the challenges Campbell faced but also highlighted moments of promise in his performance.
A Competitive Spirit on Display
In his first outing in a Browns uniform, Campbell demonstrated a competitive edge that did not go unnoticed by Schwartz. The coach remarked, “He had some really good tough competitive plays. I thought he was battling.” Facing off against elite receiver DK Metcalf, Campbell was tested early and often, revealing the steep learning curve he would need to navigate in his new environment.
However, Schwartz emphasized that Campbell still needed to acclimate to the Browns’ specific approach to coverage. Unlike some teams that teach players to cover without looking for the ball, Schwartz prefers his defenders to maintain awareness. “A lot of colleges teach it that way, and [Campbell] was only here, boots on the ground for not very long,” he noted, underlining the challenges of adapting to a new system on short notice.
Missed Opportunities for Interceptions
Despite his competitive spirit, Schwartz pointed out missed chances for Campbell that could have turned the tide in the game. “I think on two of those plays, if we get our head around, there’s chances for interceptions there,” Schwartz observed. He recalled a key moment early in the game where Campbell lost sight of the play action, which could have been avoided with better situational awareness.
Schwartz acknowledged the difficulty of placing Campbell in such a high-pressure scenario so soon after his arrival. “I thought he was battling, and he had his fair share of good plays, but then also had a couple that I’m sure he’d like to have back,” he remarked.
Preparing for Weather Challenges Ahead
Looking ahead to the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins, Schwartz spoke about the potential weather conditions that could impact performance. “There is a potential on Sunday that the wind is going to be blowing pretty good and the ball is going to move around a lot,” he explained. For Campbell and the rest of the Browns defenders, mastering the ability to track the ball will be crucial.
Physical Play Noted in Debut
Despite the areas needing improvement, Schwartz was pleased with Campbell’s physicality during his first game. “I did like the way he was playing physical. He made some really good physical tackles in there,” he expressed. Campbell recorded five combined tackles, two passes defended, and a forced fumble in the loss against the Steelers.
As the Browns prepare for their next matchup, all eyes will be on Campbell, who is likely to face another test as the Dolphins target him instead of the seasoned four-time Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. The transition to Cleveland may be challenging, but Campbell’s physical presence and competitive nature suggest he is ready to rise to the occasion.
