Jermaine Johnson hints at discontent, Cowboys encouraged to act before trade deadline

The Dallas Cowboys may find an intriguing target ahead of the NFL trade deadline in New York Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson II, who appears ready for a potential change of scenery. Johnson’s recent cryptic social media message has fueled speculation about his discontent with the Jets, especially following their disappointing start to the season.

Cowboys’ Trade Intentions

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has expressed that the team is “open for business” as the trade deadline approaches. However, he seems inclined to take a patient approach, waiting for opportunities to present themselves. Yet, with glaring weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball, particularly at linebacker and safety, the Cowboys would be wise to act decisively. The team possesses a trove of draft picks that could be leveraged to bolster their roster.

Jermaine Johnson’s Background

Jermaine Johnson, a second-round pick out of Florida State in the 2022 NFL Draft, could be an ideal fit for the Cowboys. His ties to Dallas’ coaching staff, particularly defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton—who previously held the same position with the Jets—could facilitate a smoother transition. Over his first two seasons in the league, Johnson has showcased his versatility, amassing 84 total tackles, 10 sacks, and a variety of impactful plays, including a forced fumble, fumble recovery, an interception, and even a touchdown.

Unfortunately, Johnson’s promising trajectory was hindered by a torn Achilles suffered in September 2024, which cut his season short. But if he can return to form, he would significantly enhance the Cowboys’ linebacking corps, potentially creating a formidable partnership with DeMarvion Overshown upon his return.

A Disgruntled Player Seeking Change

As the Jets struggle with an alarming 0-7 record this season, Johnson is among the players rumored to be on the trading block. While he hasn’t formally requested a trade, his recent social media activity has raised eyebrows. Following a lackluster 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers, where the Jets’ offense struggled to find its rhythm, Johnson posted a cryptic message hinting at his dissatisfaction: “Laying it all out there man… something gotta give.”

This sentiment suggests a player who is not only frustrated with his current situation but also possibly eager for a fresh start elsewhere. The Cowboys would do well to consider adding Johnson to their ranks, as his presence could provide the boost they need as they navigate the rest of the season.

With the trade deadline looming, the urgency for the Cowboys to make a move is palpable. The addition of a player like Jermaine Johnson could prove pivotal as they strive to reinforce their defense and maintain their competitive edge in the NFC.
