Jaydon Blue waits in the wings as Sanders’ fumble opens door for Cowboys’ rookie running back shakeup

Jaydon Blue poised for opportunity as Sanders’ misstep reshapes Cowboys’ backfield

Jaydon Blue, the Dallas Cowboys’ rookie running back, began the preseason as a sleeper candidate, quietly generating buzz as a potential contributor in his inaugural NFL season. However, that prospect took a hit during the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, where Blue found himself as a healthy scratch, not even suiting up for the game. The Cowboys opted to activate just two running backs: Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.

Yet, a significant turn of events may have opened the door for Blue. Miles Sanders, during a crucial moment in the game, made an unfortunate error that could benefit the fifth-round rookie. Midway through the third quarter, while attempting to advance the ball in the red zone, Sanders lost possession on a fumble, which was promptly recovered by the Eagles.

This turnover became all the more dramatic as it unfolded just before a lightning delay. If not for a last-ditch tackle from Dak Prescott, the Eagles could have returned the fumble for a touchdown, courtesy of Quinyon Mitchell. Following the turnover, the Cowboys leaned heavily on Williams, significantly reducing Sanders’ involvement for the remainder of the game.

With this costly fumble now a talking point, it raises the likelihood that Dallas might consider elevating Blue to the RB2 position in Week 2. However, stepping into this role might not yield immediate results. The Cowboys showcased their reliance on Williams during Week 1, even before Sanders’ fumble occurred, suggesting that Blue may only serve as a change-of-pace option, hoping to make a significant impact when called upon.

For Blue, making his mark will require him to be on the field during games. The unfortunate slip by Sanders could be the catalyst needed for Blue to finally get his chance to shine in the Cowboys’ backfield as the team looks to rebound from a challenging opener. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Blue can seize this opportunity and become a pivotal part of Dallas’ running game.
