Jayden Reed explodes back into Packers practice, igniting hopes for Thanksgiving comeback!

Jayden Reed Sparks Optimism for Thanksgiving Return

The Green Bay Packers concluded their final practice of the week on Friday, gearing up for an important matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Among the notable developments, wide receiver Jayden Reed made a significant return to practice after facing a challenging stint on the sidelines.

Reed’s Encouraging Return

Reed, who suffered a broken collarbone during the Week 2 victory over Washington, has officially entered a 21-day practice window. Following surgery to repair his collarbone and address a foot injury, he will not be available for the upcoming game against the Vikings. However, the anticipation surrounding his potential return for the Thanksgiving showdown against the Detroit Lions is palpable.

Passing game coordinator Jason Vrable expressed his optimism about Reed’s readiness, stating, “I think once they clear him, he’s going to be ready to roll. He’s as hungry as they come right now.” This eagerness was evident during the pre-practice warm-up, where Reed appeared to be moving with a noticeable urgency compared to his teammates.

Injury Updates and Player Availability

Meanwhile, running back Josh Jacobs also returned to practice for the second consecutive day, raising hopes that he will be able to contribute against the Vikings. Coach Matt LaFleur characterized Jacobs’ participation as limited, adding, “Just talking to him, he’s feeling pretty good, so we’ll see when we get out there.”

However, the injury report was not entirely encouraging for the Packers. Five players, including linebacker Quay Walker, defensive tackle Karl Brooks, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and receiver Savion Williams, did not participate in practice on Friday. With Walker being the team’s leading tackler and a defensive captain, his absence would be felt significantly against a formidable Vikings rushing attack that ranks eighth in yards per carry.

Strategic Timing for Reed’s Return

The decision to open Reed’s practice window on Friday came as a surprise to some, particularly given that a Wednesday opening would have allowed him a full week of practice. LaFleur addressed this timeline, noting, “I don’t ever want to speak in absolutes… but generally speaking you would open that window early in the week.”

Given that the Packers will face a short week with a game on Thursday, the timing may indeed have been strategic. The team is expected to take advantage of the mini-bye, allowing them to hold a practice on Monday before their next matchup against the Chicago Bears on December 7.

The Impact of Reed’s Return

Reed, selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has already established himself as a vital asset for the Packers. In his first two seasons, he led the team in receptions and receiving yards. Despite standing just over 5-foot-10, he has proven to be an unexpected deep threat and an exceptional run-after-catch player.

As for Jacobs, who was previously questionable due to a calf injury, his determination to play remains strong. Running backs coach Ben Sirmans commented on Jacobs’ mental toughness, saying, “If he’s really, really in pain… then you know it’s something that’s really, really bothering him. But he has a very high pain threshold.” Should Jacobs be unable to suit up, Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks are poised to shoulder the offensive responsibilities.

Defensive Concerns and Vikings Readiness

On the defensive side, the potential return of Lukas Van Ness, who has been sidelined for the last five games with a foot injury, could provide a needed boost. His participation in practice all week suggests he will be ready to contribute against Minnesota.

Across the field, the Vikings appear to be approaching full strength. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw did not practice on Thursday, but this is typical for his schedule. Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard, meanwhile, has returned to practice with confidence about playing on Sunday.

As both teams finalize their preparations, the Packers face a critical challenge. With Reed’s explosive return and Jacobs’ uncertain status, all eyes will be on Green Bay as they navigate their injury-laden roster ahead of the weekend’s clash.
