Javonte Williams Shines in Career Year but Cowboys Consider Shutting Him Down
When the Dallas Cowboys decided to bring in Javonte Williams this offseason, few anticipated the level of impact he would deliver. The fifth-year running back has burst onto the scene, amassing career highs with 252 rushing attempts, 1,201 rushing yards, 11 rushing touchdowns, and an impressive 4.8 yards per carry. His standout performance in the recent victory over the Washington Commanders allowed him to maximize his contract incentives, elevating his $3 million deal to $3.5 million. However, his remarkable season has been marred by a lingering shoulder injury that cut his game short.
Injury Concerns Prompt Caution
The shoulder issue has been affecting Williams for several weeks, prompting discussions within the organization about whether to play him in the final game of the season against the New York Giants. Given the state of the Cowboys’ season—where playoff hopes have faded—it may be wise for the team to prioritize Williams’ long-term health by sidelining him for the Week 18 finale. A break now could be essential for him to fully recover and prepare for the 2026 season.
There is uncertainty surrounding his future with the Cowboys, but ensuring he is healthy for any potential return would be preferable. Playing him in a meaningless game while he is already injured could jeopardize that.
Assessing Running Back Depth
Interestingly, while the decision to rest Williams may benefit the player, it could also have implications for the Cowboys’ roster. Currently, the team lacks depth at the running back position, with Malik Davis emerging as the primary option behind Williams. Davis has stood out this season, particularly with his 103-yard performance on Christmas Day, and he could solidify his role as the team’s No. 2 back moving forward.
However, there are two rookies—Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah—who also need evaluation. Blue has struggled this season, with only 65 yards on 22 attempts. Giving him additional snaps in the final game could help the team assess his potential. Meanwhile, Mafah is currently on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, but getting him on the field would be beneficial for the Cowboys as they look to close out the season and prepare for the future.
Looking Ahead to the Offseason
With nothing substantial left to play for, the Cowboys’ focus should shift toward the 2026 season. Evaluating the younger talent on the roster, including Blue and Mafah, becomes critical as they plan for what lies ahead. The decision to potentially rest Williams could serve multiple purposes: safeguarding his health while simultaneously providing opportunities for emerging players to showcase their abilities.
In an offseason that will involve many strategic decisions, the management of player health and development of new talent will be central to the Cowboys’ efforts to build a competitive team for the years to come.
