Jared Goff Expresses Surprise Over David Montgomery’s Departure from Bears

Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, recently shared his astonishment regarding the Chicago Bears’ decision to let running back David Montgomery leave in free agency. Since Montgomery’s arrival in Detroit, he has made significant contributions both on the field and in practice, quickly establishing himself as a vital part of the Lions’ offense.

Montgomery, a former third-round pick, has formed a powerful duo with fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Goff noted that the addition of both players has the potential to significantly elevate the running game.

“I was shocked when they let him walk,” Goff remarked, reflecting on his time watching Montgomery play in Chicago. “When we landed him, it was like, ‘Holy smokes, we just got one of the best backs in the league.’ And then you draft Gibbs, it’s like, ‘Wow, we’ve got two of the best backs in the league.’ They feed off each other, they’re both incredibly hard-working and good players.”

Montgomery’s Work Ethic Impresses Coaches

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton commended Montgomery’s professionalism and dedication. He emphasized how the running back’s work ethic serves as a model for the younger players on the roster.

“He’s just a stud how he works. A true professional,” Morton said. “It’s like I come into work, I’ve got my lunch pail, I’ve got my hard hat. Every day he brings it, no matter what. And when he gets his rep, he goes full steam. It’s pretty cool. Watching those guys carry that energy onto the field is contagious for the younger guys.”

When asked which player Montgomery reminded him of, Morton drew a comparison to Anquan Boldin, noting his consistency regardless of the game’s outcome.

Montgomery’s Impact on the Offense

As the season progresses, Montgomery has made it clear that he should not be overshadowed by the hype surrounding Gibbs. He recently delivered a standout performance, rushing for 151 yards and scoring two touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens. Lions head coach Dan Campbell assured reporters that he has not overlooked Montgomery’s capabilities.

“I haven’t forgotten about David,” Campbell stated. “We know what David is. I mean, that’s his type of game. That’s right up his alley. We feel like he can do everything for us. The one-two punch with him and Jahmyr makes both of those guys pretty special. They play off each other, give each other a breather, and we trust both of them to do multiple jobs.”

As the Lions continue their campaign, Montgomery’s contributions—both in his performance and in shaping the team’s culture—will be crucial for the team’s success. His ability to balance hard work with skill has not only impressed his teammates but has also garnered respect from the coaching staff, solidifying his role as a key player in Detroit’s offensive strategy.
