Jared Goff Reflects on Disappointing Eagles Loss
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was candid in his assessment following a narrow 16-9 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles. The loss left a bitter taste for Goff and his teammates, particularly as the offense struggled to convert critical opportunities throughout the game.
Frustrations with Offensive Execution
When asked about the offense’s shortcomings, Goff expressed his disappointment in their inability to capitalize on scoring chances.
“We felt like we moved the ball pretty decently at times,” he said. “We got down there but stalled out a few times. All the fourth downs weren’t good enough. You give a ton of credit to them; they’re a good defense. I like to think if we were able to convert a fourth down or two, it changes the game.”
Goff acknowledged that the Eagles’ defense played exceptionally well, making it difficult for the Lions to find rhythm. He noted the importance of executing on both third and fourth downs, lamenting their lack of success in these pivotal moments.
Communication Issues with Amon-Ra St. Brown
Another point of concern was the disconnect between Goff and star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who finished with only two catches on twelve targets.
“I don’t think it had anything to do with him and I,” Goff explained. “There was just tight coverage, and we just didn’t connect. There are a few I’d like to have back that I just missed. It should never be that bad; it really shouldn’t.”
Dealing with Pressure and Defensive Performance
Goff also addressed the pressure he faced throughout the game, crediting the Eagles for their effective defensive strategy. “They did a good job,” he acknowledged. “They know if you’re going to throw the ball quick, they can stop and put their hands up. We shot ourselves in the foot a whole lot, and it hurt us.”
Despite the offensive struggles, Goff had high praise for his defense, which he felt performed admirably in challenging circumstances. “The defense was incredible,” he said. “It feels horrible to let them down. Our defense plays well, and you feel like you let them down, and I know I certainly do. It sucks.”
Looking Ahead After the Loss
Goff remained optimistic about the remainder of the season, highlighting the team’s record and upcoming opportunities. “We’re six and four, in the middle of the season,” he noted. “We have three home games coming up. There’s a lot to look forward to, and we have a good veteran unit. If we respond the right way, we will.”
He recognized that the sting of the loss could serve as motivation moving forward. “You want to come out here and play well against a really good team and get a hallmark win in the middle of the season, but we didn’t get it done. We’ve got to move on and find a way to win next week.”
The Future and Potential Rematch
Looking ahead, Goff acknowledged the possibility of facing the Eagles again in the playoffs, should circumstances align. “If they get the one seed and we win a playoff game, it would go through here,” he said. “We’d like to be on the other side of it.”
Reflecting on what the Lions need to improve for a potential rematch, Goff reiterated the importance of execution. “We’re going to start with a whole bunch of areas. I know it’s like a broken record, but they played well. We didn’t, at least offensively. It sucks to feel like you let your defense down.”
As the Lions regroup, Goff’s resolve to learn from this experience will be crucial in their quest for success in the remaining games of the season.
