Ja’Marr Chase draws inspiration from Saints duo in revealing childhood revelation

CINCINNATI — Ja’Marr Chase, widely regarded as one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL, recently shared a surprising source of inspiration from his childhood. In an engaging interview with CBS Sports, Chase reflected on the wide receiver duo that captivated him during his formative years: Marques Colston and Lance Moore of the New Orleans Saints.

Influences from the Past

Chase fondly reminisced about the years between 2008 and 2012, a period when he began to truly appreciate football. “The Saints were winning and they had Marques Colston and Lance Moore,” he recalled. “Those two guys together, one was a speedster, one was a big tough guy, and they just complimented each other so well.”

Colston and Moore were instrumental in the Saints’ success, serving as a formidable one-two punch during their tenure with quarterback Drew Brees. Moore amassed a remarkable 3,512 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns, while Colston tallied an impressive 5,154 yards and 39 touchdowns in that same span.

A Strong Comparison

Interestingly, Chase and fellow Bengals wideout Tee Higgins have already surpassed the combined production of Colston and Moore over their own five-season stretch. Chase has racked up 6,396 yards and 51 touchdowns, while Higgins has contributed 5,170 yards and 41 touchdowns. This comparison underscores the evolution of wide receiver play in the league and highlights the potential for Chase and Higgins to leave their own mark on the game.

Future Aspirations

Colston and Moore were integral to the Saints’ 2009 Super Bowl victory, a feat that raises the question of whether Chase, Higgins, and Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow can achieve similar heights in their careers. Despite Burrow’s struggles with a toe injury that has sidelined him for all but three games this season and Higgins’ recent concussion, the trio has shown flashes of brilliance.

Last season, when all three were on the field, the Bengals boasted an impressive 5-0 record. This year, they are currently 2-0 with their star players in action, contrasting sharply with their 1-8 record when Burrow was absent.

A Legacy in the Making

As Chase continues to develop his game, his admiration for Saints legends Colston and Moore serves as a reminder of the lasting impact that past players can have on future generations. The Bengals’ dynamic trio has the potential to not only replicate but perhaps even exceed the accomplishments of their predecessors.
