Jaire Alexander’s Ravens future in jeopardy as cut rumors swirl amid benching drama

Jaire Alexander’s Future with Ravens in Question Amid Bench Drama

The Baltimore Ravens entered this offseason with high hopes, especially after making a significant move in free agency. They brought in veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander, aiming to bolster their defense and reunite quarterback Lamar Jackson with a former teammate. Alexander signed a one-year contract, anticipated to complement standout Marlon Humphrey as a dynamic duo in the secondary.

However, as the NFL season progresses, Ravens fans are left waiting for the anticipated impact that has yet to materialize. After playing in the season opener against the Buffalo Bills, Alexander found himself benched in Week 2. His return to the field wasn’t until Week 5 against the Houston Texans, and he subsequently sat out during a dismal 17-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 6. With a mere five tackles to his name this season, the question surrounding his future with the team looms larger.

Uncertain Role and Future with the Team

The current situation has sparked discussions regarding Alexander’s standing within the Ravens’ roster. Jeff Zrebiec addressed this topic while responding to fan inquiries, noting that although he hasn’t heard of imminent moves concerning Alexander, the cornerback’s lack of playing time raises concerns. “How long will he be OK with having no obvious role on defense?” Zrebiec pondered. This uncertainty forces the Ravens’ management to evaluate the practicality of keeping a veteran player who neither contributes to special teams nor sees significant defensive action.

The Ravens are in a position where they need to clear roster space for incoming players, including rookie Emery Jones Jr. With their secondary performing admirably, particularly with Nate Wiggins emerging as a top corner and Humphrey consistently reliable, the need for Alexander’s presence is being questioned. Given Alexander’s one-year contract, releasing him could be an easier route than attempting to trade him.

Durability Concerns and Team Dynamics

Compounding the situation are Alexander’s ongoing durability issues. Since 2021, he has missed 38 games, a statistic that casts a shadow over his reliability. As players return from injury, the Ravens face tough decisions in balancing their roster. It may be in the team’s best interest to part ways with Alexander, especially considering their current injury struggles this season.

As the Ravens evaluate their options, the clock is ticking on Alexander’s tenure with the team. His future remains uncertain, and the upcoming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether he remains a part of Baltimore’s defensive strategy or becomes a casualty of roster adjustments. The Ravens’ proactive approach to roster management will undoubtedly shape the course of their season moving forward.
