Jahlani Tavai’s Heartbreaking Absence from Week 12 Game
While New England Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai was notably absent from the team’s Week 12 triumph over the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium, his spirit remained very much present. Initially described as being out for “personal reasons,” the true depth of Tavai’s absence has recently come to light, revealing a profound personal tragedy.
A Heartfelt Loss
As the Patriots secured their 10th win of the season, Tavai was grappling with the heart-wrenching loss of his unborn daughter, Ka ua. His partner, Kalei Mau, disclosed that Ka ua was expected to arrive in March 2026. Tragically, the couple faced unimaginable grief when Mau suffered significant health complications leading to the loss.
Mau detailed her ordeal on social media, sharing that she was hospitalized at Mass General from November 20 to November 26 due to a rare blood infection. “On November 20, I was placed in a medically induced coma after I was found unresponsive in my bed. I was asleep for six days,” Mau recounted. The severity of her condition led to organ failure and an infection that affected the placenta, resulting in the loss of their baby.
An Unthinkable Experience
In a deeply emotional revelation, Mau described how Tavai was by her side during this traumatic experience. “Hours later, my body went into natural labor, and Jahlani watched me deliver our baby unconscious. He said it was like my body just knew what to do,” she wrote. The couple chose the name Ka ua, which translates to “The Rain” in Olelo O Hawai’i, symbolizing growth and continuity in their lives.
Mau expressed her gratitude for the miraculous turn of events that allowed her to wake after the coma. “By the grace of God and the power of prayer, I woke up and it was clear what I had to continue to live. Thank you, Jesus.”
Cherishing a Brief Connection
Mau poignantly described the moment she held her daughter for the first and last time, saying, “She was perfect to me. It was so hard to leave her.” In a bittersweet moment, as she left the hospital, rain began to fall, bringing her a sense of comfort and connection. “It brought me joy to know she’ll always be with me,” she shared.
In her heartfelt message, Mau also expressed her appreciation to the medical staff who cared for her and saved her life. She extended thanks to the Patriots organization for their support during this incredibly difficult time, highlighting the compassion and solidarity that the team has shown to Tavai and Mau.
A Growing Family
This devastating loss comes just over a year after the couple welcomed their first child, Honua, in November of the previous year. While Tavai’s absence during the game was felt on the field, the emotional weight he carried reflects a deeper narrative of love, loss, and resilience in the face of tragedy.
