Jack Campbell Seeks Offensive Insight as Lions Prepare for Bears

The Detroit Lions are gearing up to host the Chicago Bears on Sunday, both teams looking to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start to the season. With the backdrop of a crucial matchup, linebacker Jack Campbell is keenly aware of the stakes involved, particularly as the teams face off at Ford Field.

Focus on Winning

When asked about the implications of starting the season with two consecutive losses, Campbell was quick to dismiss any fear. He emphasized the importance of a winning mindset within the Lions’ locker room. “Honestly, you’re playing every game to win,” he said. “But at the same time, you have to move on for next week. We’re going to go out there and let it rip; what’s going to happen is going to happen. At the end of the day, we’ve got the guys in the locker room. We’re talented enough, and we have coaches who are passionate about the game and want to win.”

This confident attitude reflects Campbell’s growth as he enters his third season with the Lions. He stressed that despite the early loss, the team’s approach remains unchanged: a focus on executing the game plan and trusting the talent assembled.

Insights from the Offense

As the Lions prepare to face the Bears, Campbell has turned to the offense for insights on their former coach, Ben Johnson, now leading Chicago. The linebacker has been proactive in seeking advice from offensive players who thrived under Johnson’s system last season.

“Obviously, he was here for two years, so I know some stuff,” Campbell noted. “I’ve been asking around for opinions, especially from the offensive side who has worked with him. I think we’ve got a pretty good defensive plan going into the game; we just need to execute it.”

Continual Improvement in Pass Coverage

Since being drafted in the first round, Campbell has made consistent strides in various aspects of his game, particularly in pass coverage. However, he remains focused on areas needing improvement, notably his blitzing technique. “I just got to win. I’ve been poor; I need to improve on that,” he stated. “Whether it’s my angle, how I come in, or some pre-snap stuff, I know I need to get the job done.”

His commitment to enhancing his performance extends beyond personal goals; Campbell aims to alleviate pressure from the secondary, showcasing a team-first mentality.

Facing Caleb Williams

The Lions will also contend with Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, a talented player whose mobility presents unique challenges. Campbell acknowledged Williams’ ability to extend plays, saying, “We just got to keep him contained, do our job. The back end needs to perform as well to prevent him from going to his first read.”

He elaborated on the difficulties that arise during Williams’ scramble drills, where coverage becomes akin to a game of backyard football. “For me, the extension of the play means covering a little bit longer. Your receiver might run his route and then make something up as he scrambles,” Campbell explained. “Just being able to be good in coverage if that happens is essential.”

Praise for Williams’ Development

Despite the challenges, Campbell expressed respect for Williams, the former Heisman winner. He appreciates having faced Williams previously, providing him with valuable insights into the quarterback’s playing style. “It’s nice when you play a player; you know his player profile,” he said. “I feel like he’s grown in a couple of things. He’s a good player, and he gets better every week. He’s the number one pick for a reason, and we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

As the Lions prepare for this pivotal clash, Campbell’s blend of confidence, humility, and strategic insight sets the tone for a team eager to turn their season around.
