J.J. McCarthy’s Grip Test Drama
As the Minnesota Vikings prepare for their regular season finale against the Green Bay Packers this Sunday, the status of quarterback J.J. McCarthy remains uncertain. Head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an update on Monday, indicating that while McCarthy is making progress with his injured hand, his ability to grip a football will ultimately determine his availability for the game.
“Swelling in that hand has come down a little bit,” O’Connell noted. “Really, it’s just gonna be about working through it this week and seeing what his grip strength is like and if he can possibly give it a go this week. That will be something I’ll keep you guys posted on.”
Injury Background
McCarthy’s injury occurred late in the first half during a victory over the New York Giants, where he collided with a defender’s helmet. The impact forced him out of the game after a promising start, and subsequent examinations revealed a hairline fracture. Consequently, he was sidelined for last Thursday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions, which the Vikings won despite a lackluster performance from backup quarterback Max Brosmer.
The upcoming game against the Packers, though devoid of playoff implications, carries additional significance for Vikings fans if McCarthy can make a return for one last appearance in his second season. It has been a challenging year for the 22-year-old, who has missed seven games due to various injuries. His on-field performance has also raised concerns, with a completion rate of just 57 percent, more interceptions than touchdown passes, and a passer rating of 71.2. Nevertheless, McCarthy has managed a 5-4 record as a starter and showed glimpses of improvement in his last three games against the Commanders, Cowboys, and Giants.
The Road Ahead
“It’s just going to be a matter of purely having the grip on the football and getting that to a place where he can potentially go out there and throw it,” O’Connell emphasized. “I’d love to get him one more game.”
Should McCarthy be unable to play, Brosmer would likely step in for his third career start, despite having faced considerable challenges in his first two outings. The Vikings also have John Wolford and Brett Rypien available as options in the quarterback room.
Additional Injury Updates
In terms of other injury news, return specialist Myles Price and defensive tackle Elijah Williams, both undrafted rookies, have been ruled out this week due to ankle injuries. Meanwhile, tight end T.J. Hockenson, right tackle Brian O’Neill, and running backs Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason are all in a similar situation, with hopes of progressing throughout the week. The first official injury report will be released on Wednesday, providing further clarity as the Vikings gear up for their final showdown of the season.
