J.J. McCarthy set to return as starter against Commanders

After spending last Sunday in Seattle on the sidelines due to a concussion, quarterback J.J. McCarthy is poised to reclaim his role as the Vikings’ starter for their upcoming home clash against the Commanders. Head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an optimistic update on Monday, confirming that McCarthy is “symptom-free.”

The final hurdle for McCarthy involves completing a full practice day, which is expected to take place on Wednesday. O’Connell stated, “Now the last phase, I believe, of the protocol is he needs to just have a full practice day… Expecting, barring any unforeseen changes, having that Wednesday will allow him to have a normal full week and likely be able to go in as our starter on Sunday.”

Impact of McCarthy’s Absence

McCarthy’s absence against the Seahawks may have spared him from experiencing a fate similar to that of rookie Max Brosmer. In his first career start, Brosmer faced an elite defense and struggled significantly, managing to throw for just 126 yards while being intercepted four times in a 26-0 loss.

With the Vikings now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention after a disappointing four-game losing streak, the focus shifts to the final five games of the season. These games will serve as an opportunity to restore team pride, find offensive rhythm, and evaluate McCarthy’s development heading into the offseason. The hope is that he will demonstrate tangible progress that could inspire optimism for the future.

Upcoming Matchup Against the Commanders

This weekend, the Vikings, sitting at 4-8, will face off against the 3-9 Commanders, who are currently on a seven-game losing streak after narrowly falling to the Broncos on Sunday night. The matchup presents a critical chance for McCarthy to showcase his growth and help the team finish the season on a positive note.

Injury Updates from Monday

In addition to McCarthy’s situation, O’Connell shared some encouraging news regarding center Ryan Kelly, who left the previous game with a hip flexor injury. “He seems like he’s gonna be day-to-day but with a real chance to be able to go this week,” O’Connell noted. Kelly is returning from a six-game absence due to a concussion.

Meanwhile, running back Aaron Jones is dealing with a shoulder issue that he “re-aggravated,” though O’Connell indicated that it doesn’t appear to be a severe setback. “He doesn’t seem to have made it any worse for the wear,” he stated, adding that Jones will also be monitored on a day-to-day basis.

Concerns on the Offensive Line

Blake Brandel, who filled in for Donovan Jackson at left guard, has entered the concussion protocol after reporting head discomfort post-game. However, he was symptom-free on Monday, which offers a glimmer of hope for his quick recovery. “We’ll see how he progresses throughout the week,” O’Connell commented.

As for left tackle Christian Darrisaw, the plan is for him to maintain his usual practice routine with the expectation of playing on Sunday. Jackson is reportedly “improving by the day” and will also be considered day-to-day.

The Vikings may have the chance to field a full offensive line in front of McCarthy for the game against Washington, although the left side of the line will remain a focal point on this week’s injury reports.
