Isaiah Simmons’ NFL Journey Takes a Surprising Turn

Isaiah Simmons, once a celebrated prospect, has seen his NFL career take a series of unexpected turns. Selected as the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, the Clemson University standout was touted for his versatility, capable of playing multiple positions on the field.

Early Career in Arizona

During his three seasons in Arizona, Simmons appeared in 51 games, including a playoff appearance in 2021. His statistics, however, tell a story of underwhelming performance. He recorded four interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, along with two fumble recoveries and 7.5 sacks. While these numbers are respectable, they fall short of the lofty expectations that accompanied his draft status.

The Cardinals ultimately decided not to exercise Simmons’s fifth-year option, a clear signal of their diminishing confidence in his potential. In a further twist, the franchise traded him to the New York Giants during the summer of 2023.

Struggles with the Giants

Simmons spent two seasons with the Giants, primarily playing safety. Despite being a regular on the roster—participating in every game and making five starts—his impact remained limited. The Giants’ coaching staff struggled to unlock the potential that many had seen in him during his collegiate career.

A New Opportunity with the Panthers

After parting ways with the Giants, Simmons signed with the Green Bay Packers in April, but his time there was short-lived as he was released in August. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when he joined the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad last month.

Recently, the Panthers found themselves in need of reinforcements following the injury of one of their promising young linebackers, Trevin Wallace, who was placed on injured reserve. In response, the Panthers have activated Isaiah Simmons from the practice squad, giving the linebacker another shot at revitalizing his career.

With a fresh opportunity ahead, Simmons is poised to demonstrate his worth on the active roster once again. As he steps into this new role, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he can finally live up to the promise he showed in college.
