Isaac TeSlaa poised for a breakout as Lions’ rookie receiver steps up in Week 2

Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa is set to take on a larger role in the Detroit Lions’ offense as they prepare for Week 2. In his NFL debut, TeSlaa was limited to just three snaps, but he made a significant impact during that brief time, catching a remarkable pass late in the fourth quarter that resulted in both his first reception and his first touchdown.

Coaching Confidence in TeSlaa

After the game, head coach Dan Campbell expressed his eagerness to incorporate TeSlaa more prominently into the offensive scheme. “Certainly, we’d like to use him more,” Campbell stated. “There’s something there. Looks like he’s back and feels pretty good. It was good to see him make a play. He was only in for three plays on offense but did a good job on those three; made that big catch, so we’re going to start trying to get him some reps.”

This statement reflects the coaching staff’s belief in TeSlaa’s potential and their commitment to providing him with more opportunities to shine.

Overcoming Early Challenges

TeSlaa’s limited participation in Week 1 was largely due to an illness that hindered his practice time leading up to the game. Campbell clarified the situation, saying, “We really wanted to try and get him involved last week, but then he got sick and missed a lot of practice, so then we didn’t feel comfortable trying to load him up. So, it was going to be very limited.”

With TeSlaa sidelined, the Lions turned to Kalif Raymond, who stepped in as the WR3 and logged 44 offensive snaps, marking his heaviest workload since Week 12 of the 2022 season.

A Promising Track Record

Despite the limited action in his first game, TeSlaa has demonstrated a knack for scoring, having found the end zone in four consecutive games if you include his performances in the preseason. The Arkansas product scored a touchdown in each of his preseason appearances, following up his Hall of Fame Game debut with a consistent scoring streak.

Given the Lions’ offensive struggles in Week 1, the decision to increase TeSlaa’s involvement could be a pivotal move. As the team looks to find its rhythm, enabling TeSlaa to showcase his skills might be just what the offense needs to spark a turnaround.
