Hunter Henry’s Life-Changing Kenya Safari
When Hunter Henry, the New England Patriots tight end, embarked on an unforgettable journey to Kenya this summer, he had high hopes of encountering a variety of wildlife. However, one elusive creature managed to escape his gaze—a leopard. “We didn’t get to see the animal,” Henry shared with a chuckle during a recent phone call with Patriots on SI.
A Meaningful Mission
Joined by his wife and former NFL linebacker Mark Herzlich, Henry spent a transformative week in Africa with the International Justice Mission (IJM). This organization focuses on combating child trafficking and slavery, working to empower local communities to better address these pressing issues. The safari was not just a leisurely escape; it was part of IJM’s Team Freedom initiative, which aims to bring awareness and support to those affected by exploitation.
Henry’s trip was a long-standing aspiration, a bucket list moment he had envisioned for years. Yet, the experience extended far beyond mere sightseeing. “(IJM) tugged on my heart pretty hard,” he reflected. The interactions he had were profound and eye-opening. “It was life-changing. Talking and meeting people was incredible.”
Wildlife Encounters
While the leopard remained elusive, Henry was fortunate enough to witness a wealth of other majestic animals during his safari. The sights and sounds of the African wilderness undoubtedly added to the richness of the experience. Yet, it was the human connection and the stories shared that left an indelible mark on his heart.
As Henry reflects on the journey, it’s clear that the impact of his time in Kenya extends far beyond the confines of the safari vehicle. The lessons learned and the lives touched resonate on a deeper level, underscoring the importance of compassion and advocacy in the fight against injustice.
