Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans challenges offensive line to ignite struggling run game against Colts

Texans’ Run Game Needs Revitalization Against Colts

The Houston Texans’ rushing attack has struggled to make an impact during the first 12 weeks of the NFL season. Currently, they find themselves ranked in the bottom tier for several key rushing statistics. Averaging just 107.6 rushing yards per game, they sit in the bottom 10 of the league. With only five total rushing touchdowns, they rank among the bottom five teams in that category as well. Moreover, their run rate of 40.6% places them firmly in the lower echelon of the NFL. While they aren’t the worst in terms of rushing productivity, there is ample room for improvement as they head into the latter half of the regular season.

Ryans’ Call to Action

In preparation for their upcoming matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans emphasized the need for his offensive line to step up and find the spark that could ignite their run game. “For our offensive line, the rushing game, we have to just stay connected on our blocks,” Ryans stated. He elaborated on the importance of execution, particularly during double-team situations. “If we stay connected and we finish our blocks, with the right mindset, we have good running lanes,” he noted, underscoring the pivotal role the line plays in establishing a balanced offensive attack.

Building on Last Week’s Performance

Last week, the Texans had a chance to showcase their rushing potential against the Buffalo Bills, who are known for having one of the more vulnerable run defenses in the league. Rookie running back Woody Marks took center stage, carrying the ball 16 times for 74 yards—his highest single-game rushing total this season. This performance not only highlighted Marks’ abilities but also provided a glimpse of the potential that exists within the Texans’ rushing offense.

Marks has demonstrated flashes of brilliance in previous games, both as a runner and a pass-catcher out of the backfield. His ability to contribute effectively could bolster the Texans’ ground game as they look to build momentum in the weeks ahead. The coaching staff is optimistic that with the right adjustments and a renewed focus on fundamentals, Houston can transform its rushing game into a more formidable offensive weapon as the season progresses.

As the Texans prepare to take on the Colts, the spotlight will be on the offensive line to deliver the consistency and execution necessary to elevate their run game and provide the balance needed for sustained success.
