Packers Reclaim Jonathan Ford in Playoff Push
The Green Bay Packers have made a surprising move this week, reclaiming defensive lineman Jonathan Ford as they gear up for a crucial playoff push. After spending two-and-a-half seasons on the practice squad, Ford finds himself in a critical role as the team faces mounting injuries on the defensive front.
Ford’s Journey Back to Green Bay
Jonathan Ford, a seventh-round draft pick in 2022, has endured a long road to relevance in the Packers’ defense. During his rookie year and the early part of his second season, he remained on the practice squad, unable to break into the lineup. His fortunes changed when the Chicago Bears signed him midseason in 2024, where he finally got the chance to showcase his skills.
However, a recent injury crisis has paved the way for his return. The Packers’ defensive line took a significant hit during a game against the Baltimore Ravens, losing key players like Devonte Wyatt and Jordon Riley to injuries. With the defensive line in disarray, Ford’s experience and size are now seen as assets for the playoff run ahead.
Opportunity Knocks
In his first practice back with Green Bay, Ford expressed eagerness to contribute. “He’s been preaching opportunity since I met him,” Ford shared, referring to conversations with defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington. “I just want to help this team as much as I can.” After witnessing one of the worst run-defending performances in franchise history, Ford’s return comes at a crucial moment.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 338 pounds, Ford carries the weight of expectation on his shoulders. “I just want to contribute. That’s it,” he said. “Whatever happened last game is done. We can’t live in the past. I just want to come in and help the guys and give my best effort.”
Experience Gained in Chicago
During his time with the Bears, Ford played in four games last season and eight this season before being released. His experiences in Chicago have fostered a newfound confidence. “It definitely boosted it because you can be in the league for however long, but you really don’t know what you’ve got until you go against the ones,” he explained. Now, Ford believes he can prove he belongs in the league.
With 173 snaps of regular-season experience under his belt, Ford is ready to step up as the Packers face off against the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday. The challenge will be significant; the Packers’ defensive tackles were overpowered by the Ravens, and they will soon confront high-octane rushing attacks from playoff contenders like the Bears and Eagles.
Adapting to New Challenges
General manager Brian Gutekunst has been proactive in addressing the team’s size issues by signing Riley and claiming Quinton Bohanna off waivers. However, with further injuries, the decision to bring back Ford was a necessary response. “I was literally about to take a nap when I got the call,” Ford recounted, surprised yet thrilled by the news of his return. “I thought it was a joke, but it was real.”
Familiarity with the team’s scheme and several players has eased Ford’s transition back to the Packers. “It feels great because we just saw this team a few weeks ago,” he said. “I thought that was going to be the last time I saw them, and then, boom, I’m back in the locker room.”
A New Beginning in a Familiar Place
Returning to a locker room that has undergone significant changes since his departure was a surreal experience for Ford. “I didn’t even know how to get around when I got back here,” he laughed. “I came back and asked where the bathroom was. I’m happy to be back though. It’s a great organization.”
With optimism and determination, Ford is ready to contribute to the Packers’ playoff ambitions. The team’s faith in him signifies a new chapter in his career, and he is committed to making the most of this opportunity.
