Giants pivot to McAtamney as Gano heads to injured reserve
The New York Giants made a move that many anticipated by placing veteran kicker Graham Gano on injured reserve, but the decision that followed surprised even the most ardent followers of the team. On Saturday, the Giants announced the elevation of kicker Jude McAtamney from the practice squad, overlooking the more seasoned Younghoe Koo, who will have to wait at least another week to make his debut in blue.
A twist in the kicking game
The Giants signed Koo earlier in the week after his release from the Atlanta Falcons, leading many to believe the eight-year veteran was poised to fill the void left by Gano. However, the choice to go with the less experienced McAtamney raises eyebrows and prompts speculation about the rationale behind the decision.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, while he did not observe much of the kicking performance during practice, he noted that Koo appeared to struggle with his kickoffs. Raanan shared an anecdote on social media, recounting that Koo “definitely shanked a couple kickoffs at practice on Friday. One hit off the back of a player on the front line of the return team.” Such struggles may have contributed to the Giants’ decision to roll the dice with McAtamney instead.
McAtamney’s limited experience
McAtamney has been with the Giants’ practice squad since last year and has had a brief stint on the field, having kicked just one field goal from 31 yards and successfully converted one extra point in his career. In contrast, Koo’s resume boasts eight seasons in the NFL and an impressive career success rate of 85.8%. Although his performance has waned since last season, many would have presumed he’d be the first choice to step into Gano’s role.
Regardless of the reasoning, the Giants are putting their faith in McAtamney as they navigate this new chapter in their kicking game. As the team prepares for their upcoming matchups, the decision reflects a calculated risk, one that could define the trajectory of their special teams this season.
