George Pickens’ potential $121.7M extension with Cowboys sparks wild speculation on future mega-deal

George Pickens’ Potential $121.7M Extension with the Cowboys Fuels Speculation

The Dallas Cowboys are considering a potential extension for wide receiver George Pickens, igniting a wave of speculation about what such a deal might entail. The Cowboys took a calculated risk by acquiring Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and so far, that gamble appears to be paying dividends.

Pickens’ Impact on the Cowboys

After a tumultuous stint with the Steelers, where he was often labeled a malcontent, Pickens has transformed into a reliable asset for Dallas. Since joining the team, he has amassed an impressive 36 receptions for 607 yards and six touchdowns during the first six games of the season. Beyond the stats, Pickens has also elevated team morale, proving himself to be a positive presence in the locker room. This newfound stability has prompted discussions about a contract extension, with owner Jerry Jones confirming that the topic is indeed on the table.

What Could an Extension Look Like?

While the specifics of a potential extension remain speculative, K.D. Drummond from Blogging the Boys has provided insights into what a new deal might entail based on comparable players. Drummond examined contracts for other wide receivers, specifically those categorized as WR1A types, such as Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins and Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Waddle recently inked a deal worth $84.75 million over three years, featuring $36 million fully guaranteed and a $19 million signing bonus. Meanwhile, Higgins secured a contract valued at $115 million over four years, which includes $30 million guaranteed and a $15 million signing bonus.

Taking these figures into account, Drummond projected that Pickens could command a four-year extension worth approximately $121.7 million, with $38 million guaranteed and a $19 million signing bonus. This proposal also suggests a structure allowing the Cowboys to exit the deal after two seasons, with the potential for void years to help distribute the salary cap impact.

The Financial Consideration for the Cowboys

The pivotal question remains whether Jerry Jones is willing to allocate more than $30 million annually for a second wide receiver. Should the Cowboys proceed with this investment, it would solidify their standing as one of the premier offenses in the NFL for the foreseeable future.

With the Cowboys positioned to make a significant financial commitment, the implications of such a deal extend far beyond just Pickens. It could reshape the team’s offensive strategy and impact their long-term salary cap management.

As discussions continue, all eyes will be on Dallas and how they decide to navigate this potential extension with one of their star playmakers.
