Fred Warner praises Brock Purdy’s competitive spirit
Fred Warner stands as one of the cornerstones of the San Francisco 49ers, a player whose words carry weight within the locker room. As a pivotal leader during the Kyle Shanahan era, Warner has shared the field with various quarterbacks, including Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, and currently, Brock Purdy. With the organization now fully backing Purdy as their franchise quarterback, Warner has been vocal about the qualities that set Purdy apart.
Competitive Fire Lights the Way
Warner articulated his admiration for Purdy’s intensity, stating, “I think the common denominator when it comes to an outstanding QB or player in general is that competitive fire. When things get on the line, regardless if it’s at practice or in a game, there’s just that dawg in you that comes out, and Brock Purdy has that through and through.”
Reflecting on Purdy’s early days, Warner recalled a moment from when Purdy was a rookie. “I remember back when he was a rookie, he’s playing on the scout team against us, and I’m barking at him. I’m giving it to him, and he’s giving it right back,” Warner shared. This initial exchange highlighted Purdy’s determination, even as a late-round draft pick. Warner was taken aback, thinking, “Oh snap, this is Mr. Irrelevant. This is the last pick in the draft.”
Swagger and Confidence on Display
Warner further emphasized Purdy’s unique flair on the field, noting his ability to make impressive plays, including no-look passes. “You see him out there on Sundays Dougie’ing on them folks,” he added, showcasing a blend of skill and swagger that energizes the team. For Warner, it’s not merely about motivational speeches; it’s about the confidence and competitive spirit that players like Purdy bring to the field.
“This is what the team rallies around,” Warner explained. “It’s not about the rah-rah speeches. Speeches are great if given by somebody that has the conviction to give them, but at the end of the day, players rally around confident individuals who are competitive in what they do.”
Purdy’s Resilience Amidst Challenges
Purdy’s journey has not been without its challenges. Despite facing some inconsistencies this season and dealing with a turf toe injury that will linger throughout the year, he has proven to be a resilient leader. Having already led the 49ers to both the NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl, his accomplishments and franchise records tell a compelling story of tenacity and skill.
A Triumvirate of Leadership
As the 49ers look toward the future, the leadership trio of Warner, Purdy, and tight end George Kittle embodies the essence of 49ers football. Their competitive nature sets the tone for the team, inspiring those around them. While the path to success this season remains uncertain, the full extent of their competitiveness will be unveiled as the team approaches the end of the year.
