Falcons reshape roster with key signings ahead of pivotal season opener
The Atlanta Falcons are making significant adjustments to their roster as they prepare for the highly anticipated season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team recently announced the addition of defensive lineman Sam Roberts from the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad, along with a series of other strategic roster moves.
Key additions and adjustments
Sam Roberts, a 27-year-old defensive lineman, brings depth to the Falcons’ defensive front. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 295 pounds, Roberts was originally a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. After spending two seasons with New England, he was waived before being claimed by the Panthers, where he played in three games during the 2024 season.
In a notable roster shuffle, wide receiver David Sills V was first released from the active roster but quickly re-signed and placed on the practice squad. Sills had emerged as a standout player during the preseason, showing strong chemistry with veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins while primarily working with the second and third-team offensive units. After joining the Falcons last January following a stint on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad, Sills has become an integral part of the team’s offensive plans.
Practice squad movements
In a corresponding move, defensive lineman Simeon Barrow Jr. was waived from the practice squad. Barrow, an undrafted rookie from the University of Miami, had a productive college career, recording at least three sacks in each of his four seasons, including a notable 5.5 sacks in his last year. He participated in all three preseason games, contributing with two tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.
In preparation for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers, the Falcons have elevated both Sills and running back Carlos Washington Jr. to the active roster as part of their standard practice squad elevations.
Looking ahead to the opener
As the Falcons gear up for their matchup against Tampa Bay, the team remains focused on fine-tuning their roster. The season opener is set to kick off at 1:00 PM at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the Falcons will look to start the season strong and build momentum for the weeks to come.
