A Sudden Change at Kicker
The Falcons’ decision to sign Romo came in the wake of Younghoe Koo’s missed 44-yard field goal in a narrow Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After recognizing the need for a reliable kicker, Atlanta added Romo to their practice squad midweek. Just a few days later, he was elevated to the active roster, just in time for a pivotal showdown against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football. Ironically, this matchup was against the team with which he spent the previous season.
A Stellar Performance
Romo did not disappoint, going a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals and adding an extra point in the Falcons’ 22-6 victory. The game was characterized by its reliance on field goals, and Romo’s execution was crucial for Atlanta. After his stint in the XFL, Romo found himself bouncing between practice squads, eventually getting a shot with the Vikings due to an injury to their starting kicker, Will Reichard. Earlier in the offseason, he had also competed for a spot with the New England Patriots, but the team opted to keep rookie Andres Borregales.

With the Falcons’ kicking situation in limbo following Koo’s struggles, Romo’s signing represented both a risk and an opportunity. Although Lenny Krieg was already on the practice squad, Romo emerged as a viable option.
