Falcons’ Defensive Woes Spotlighted as Kaden Elliss Receives Low PFF Grade After Narrow Loss to Bucs

The Atlanta Falcons faced a tough defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, falling 23-20 in a matchup that underscored both their defensive improvements and lingering issues. A missed 44-yard field goal by Younghoe Koo in the dying moments sealed their fate, but it was the performance of linebacker Kaden Elliss that raised eyebrows in the aftermath.

Elliss’s Surprising Grade

In the eyes of Pro Football Focus (PFF), Kaden Elliss was marked as the second-worst player on defense, earning a perplexing grade of 41.2. This rating placed him fourth-lowest across both teams, drawing attention to his struggles on the field despite his team’s overall defensive progress.

The Falcons showcased a commendable effort on defense, with outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie leading the way. Ebiketie achieved a solid grade of 78.4, contributing two hurries and four tackles in just 14 pass-rushing snaps. Alongside him, linebacker Divine Deablo and safety Xavier Watts also shone, earning grades of 76.0 and 72.8, respectively.

Defensive Highlights and Lowlights

Deablo’s performance stood out, as he tallied five tackles, three hurries, and nearly made an interception with a well-timed pass breakup. He allowed only 21 yards during the game, demonstrating a strong presence on the field. Meanwhile, Watts, making his NFL debut, recorded six tackles and broke up two passes, though he narrowly missed an interception opportunity.

On the offensive side, tight end Kyle Pitts had a notable game, snagging seven catches for 59 yards, including critical plays in the final moments that positioned the Falcons for a potential comeback. Right guard Chris Lindstrom also maintained his reputation, graded as one of the best, having given up no sacks or hits while facing three pressures.

Struggles in the Defensive Line

While some players excelled, Elliss’s performance raised significant concerns. He recorded one pressure and three tackles, but his 28.6 missed tackle percentage was the second-highest on the team. Notably, he was responsible for allowing four receptions, including a touchdown, on five targets.

His missed opportunity to sack Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield proved pivotal. After failing to secure the tackle, Mayfield converted a critical third down, leading to the game-winning touchdown for Tampa Bay.

Overall Defensive Performance

The Falcons’ defensive unit had its share of challenges, with defensive lineman David Onyemata receiving a dismal grade of 29.6, failing to generate any pressures and contributing just one tackle before being replaced in the second half. Both tight end Charlie Woerner and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge struggled to make an impact, combining for zero catches.

Despite the mixed results, other notable performances included cornerback AJ Terrell (69.7), quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (68.9), and rookie running back Bijan Robinson (64.0).

Looking Ahead

With their Week 1 loss behind them, the Falcons will seek redemption in their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings. Scheduled for Sunday at 8:20 p.m. EST, the Falcons hope to rectify their missteps and leverage their defensive potential in pursuit of a much-needed victory.
