Evan Engram shines in Broncos’ overtime thriller
Evan Engram’s breakout moment with the Denver Broncos arrived later than many expected, but it was well worth the wait. After 13 weeks of anticipation, the veteran tight end delivered a performance that not only silenced critics but also proved pivotal in Denver’s thrilling 27-26 overtime win against the Washington Commanders on Sunday night.
A Night of Career-Highs
Engram achieved season-best marks in targets, receptions, and receiving yards during the game, finishing with nine targets, six receptions, and 79 yards. His contributions stood out among all Broncos pass-catchers, but it was his critical play on the final offensive drive that really showcased his impact. Taking a short pass from quarterback Bo Nix, Engram broke free for a remarkable 41-yard gain into Washington territory, setting the stage for running back RJ Harvey’s game-winning touchdown.
This performance is exactly what the Broncos envisioned when they signed Engram to a two-year, $23 million contract in free agency. After dealing with injuries and finding his place within the team’s offensive hierarchy, it seems he is finally delivering on the investment the Broncos made in him.
Coach’s Insight on Engram’s Role
Head coach Sean Payton shared his thoughts on Engram’s performance, highlighting the complexities of offensive strategy. “In some weeks, it works out, some weeks it doesn’t,” Payton explained. “It’s not as easy as saying, ‘This is going to be…’ There are going to be certain coverages.” He emphasized that Engram’s isolation route was a product of a favorable coverage look, adding, “He’s one of the guys that we want to have ‘X’ amount of targets to. I think the thing he does really well is run and run after the catch.”
A Fluid Offensive Strategy
In the Broncos’ multifaceted offensive scheme, predicting which player will be featured in any given week is a challenge. Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, and now Engram have all seen their share of targets, with the game plan often adjusted based on the opposing defense. Last week, Engram and rookie wideout Pat Bryant were prioritized, with Bryant also making his mark with seven targets, three receptions, and 42 yards.
Looking ahead to their next matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Engram finds himself in a favorable position. The Raiders rank 26th in points allowed per game and 17th in both passing yards and passing touchdowns allowed. This bodes well for Engram’s potential to contribute even further.
Building Momentum for the Future
Sutton expressed optimism about the growing success of the team’s tight ends and their ability to enhance the overall offense. “I was excited to see those guys have the success that they had,” he noted. He went on to emphasize the importance of diversifying their attack, stating, “Now you can’t say, ‘Well this guy doesn’t do this, and this guy doesn’t do that.’ No, these guys are just as pivotal pieces in this offense as everybody else.”
As the Broncos look to build on this momentum, Engram’s emergence could be a crucial factor in their quest for success in the remainder of the season.
